Frankfurt Airport Train Station

There really is a train station at the airport - or nearby? Can anyone give details, i.e., location, if you have used, etc.

Yes, just walk through the airport and follow the signs to the trains.

Two train stations, one local one long distance.
Don't go to the wrong station. ;-)

Wow, that was fast - thank you so much! You Fodorites are great. I'll push my luck here - have you ever taken the train to Prague? We only have a very short time - we may have to fly that portion.

It's a pain having to take the train, about 6 hours to 6h30min.
I'd strongly advise on flying, it's just a short flight.

Since a good majority of tourists arrive in Frankfurt by plane, it is a good idea to know how to get into the city by train. It is quick, with a train only taking 11 min. to the Main Train Station - Hauptbahnhof, or another couple of minutes more if you would like to get off at the Hauptwache or the next stop Konstablerwache. There is usually a train every 20 min. and they run from very early in the morning til quite late at night. So even if you have a early morning flight, you can still stay in Frankfurt instead of in one of the expensive hotels near the airport.

How to find the train station in this huge airport? Well, there are two of them. If you are just coming into Frankfurt or going to Mainz or Wiesbaden, you should follow the signs for Regional Trains or S-Bahn. This station is under Terminal 1 and the signs will be in English. If you are catching a long distance train - like the ICE, it will most likely arrive at the Fernbahnhof - or Long Distance Train station. Again, follow the signs, though this is located sort of across from Terminal 1. If you land at Terminal 2, simply take the fun little monorail over to Terminal 1.

Cost - a single ticket (einzel fahrt) costs 3.70 euro.
A group ticket (gruppen karte) costs 14 euro. This ticket would be good for up to 5 people and is valid all day long on all the transportation in Frankfurt. A good choice for 2 or more people.

The RMV ticket machines can be a bit confusing and they often have an employee to help out. The machines will switch to English by pushing the small flag button. They are not touch screen. You can either type in your destination number and then the "einzel fahrt" button or if you are just going to Frankfurt, there is a button you can push for that without bothering with finding any numbers. The machines take 5 and 10 euro bills for single tickets and if you are getting a group ticket it will take a 20 euro bill. You will get change.

In Frankfurt you do not need to validate your ticket unlike some other cities in Germany. It is all on the honor system. If you do not have a ticket though, you will be fined 40 euro immediately.

There is a DB Travel Center located right next to the escalators for the Regional Train Station. They can print your tickets for you (this will cost you 2 euro), take credit cards for payments (the RMV machines will not take American credit cards)and give you information about

(I just copied and pasted this from a Frankfurt city guide)

This will be my first time to a foreign country so am a little nervous. Will be flying Singapore Air, which lands in Frankfurt at 11:15 am, if on time. Then will be traveling by train to Hassfurt, town where my dad was born. Question: Once I clear customs, how do I go about finding - purchasing ticket for my 2nd leg of travel, dates have not been finalized, sometime in July or August. I have read there are two train stations, need directions on which one I should be heading for and how to get there. Thanks, Andrea

Upon arrival in Frankfurt you'll simply follow the signs for the train station (Bahnhof (good word to learn)). Trains to Hassfurt connect in Wurzburg, so you'll be using the long distance train station (Fehrnbahnhof).

you can check schedules at www.bahn.de - you'll also see there the red DB logo, which is what you'll be looking for to find the train station. Don't fret it - the train station will be obvious, or just ask someone and they'll point you on your way.

At the station, you can buy your ticket to Hassfurt - I find it helps to have a printout of the schedule, and circle the train you want to take to show to the ticket agent.

www.bahn.de shows that there are trains every 30-60min all day long, and the total journey to Hassfurt takes ~2 1/2 hrs, with a change in Wurzburg (15min connection time).

Use these location on the DB website
Frankfurt(M)Flughafen to
Hassfurt Bahnhof
