Frankfurt airport question...

Hello.. I know there are threads on this already, and I have read them.. but I have a couple questions if someone wouldnt mind setting me straigt..

We leave in a week for our trip to Egypt.. we have a six hour layover in Frankfurt and have decided to chnace it, and go into town.. we would like to go to the Romer area to catch a quick meal and walk around for a bit.. My questions are:

1. I know we need the S-Bahn S8 into town..Does this train take us to a stop at the Romer area?.. or do we need to catch a bus from a different stop?...

2. Does the same S8 train take us back to the airport?..

3. Can anyone familiar with current conditions at the airport suggest how soon we should arrive back at the airport for our egyptair flight to cairo?.. would 2 hours be soon enough?

4. There are four of us flying together, and a fifth person coming in on a different flight, the 5th person should arrive about an hour and a half before the rest of us.. Can anyone suggest a good place for him to be waiting to meet us?.. Is there a spot near the train, or near where the customs area?

Sorry to ask so many questions, and simple questions at that!.. I'm just trying to make sure I understand what we need to do and where to go, so that I dont waste time being lost or asking questions when we get there.. I want to be able to make the most of our short time in Frankfurt, and not miss our next flight..

Any tips or ideas are greatly appeciated!!

Thanks
John

I congratulate you on your 'planning ahead' thinking, and apart from this Fodors board, can only advise a quick stop at the information counter at Frankfurt airport. I love this airport but never venture away from it when waiting for a connection. I would think 2 hours is a MUST for check in for your onward flight to Egypt. Have a fabulous time!

2. Yes, you will take the same S8 back to the airport from one of the Frankfurt stations.

3. Will you have already checked in for Egypeair flight before you head into town? If yes, then you have more leeway. You need to check with Egyptair on their policies.

I am pretty sure I have answered this before in another thread, about how to go from the airport to the Römer and back again and how much time is needed, but here it is again. The train takes 15 minutes from the airport to the Hauptwache.

First, for your friend arriving earlier. Tell them to go to the Meeting Point area in Terminal 1. There is a Cafe Marche there with wonderful home made baked goods. They can wait there and the Meeting Point will be easy for you to find. The Regional train station is right past there and the luggage storage is also right next to it. This is all in Hall B, in Terminal 1.

Buy a group day pass for 14.35 euro. This will get your entire group of 5 people into Frankfurt and back to the airport. Just push the button on the ticket machine that says "Gruppe Frankfurt". These machines will not take credit cards. If you want to use a credit card, go into the DB counter located right next door. You do not need to validate your tickets in Frankfurt, just keep it with you in case the controllers are checking.

You can take S-8 or S-9 into Frankfurt. Stay on it til the 2nd stop past the main train station and get off at the Hauptwache. Go upstairs. You will see a large Esprit store and a Hako shoe store in front of you with a pedestrian walkway between them. Head down that. In 5 minutes you will be at the Römer. Reverse to go back to the airport. Just look for the little airplanes on the signs over the stairways, on the electronic signs and on the trains themselves.

You can buy a pastry and coffee from one of the bakeries that you will pass and then have more time to sightsee. The river will be to the front of you as you walk through the Römerberg, past the red and white Alte Nikolai church. Do go inside, it is very pretty and was built in 1290. Go to the river, up on the Eisener Steg bridge. Here you get a good view of the city. The church with the 2 odd looking towers on it on the same bank as the Römer is the St.Leonhards church, built in 1219. Well worth a visit to see the Hanging Vault inside as well as the beautiful old altars, frescos, and stained glass from the 1400's.

Here are 3 other choices of things to see - the Jörg Ratgeb wall paintings in the Karmeliter Cloister, 150 meters long, with scenes from the life of Christ, painted from 1513-1519. The Kaiserdom where the 22 emperor elections were held and 10 coronations. The Jewish Holocaust Memorial Wall with over 12,000 names of Frankfurts Jewish citizens on it, including Anne, Margot and Edith Frank. If you want to see any of these, I can tell you how to get there, as they are all within just a block or two of the Römer. The Klein Markt Halle is also a nice place to visit, for even more great pastries. It is on the street that practically emerges from the front door of the Kaiserdom. Just walk two blocks, going past the Modern Art Museum. The back of the Klein Markt Halle comes out on the Liebfrauen platz, which connects with the same pedestrian passageway that you walked down to get to the Römer.

Have fun in Frankfurt.
