Frankfort as a "Base - where to go?
I am going to Frankfort to visit a friend - have never been to Europe. She has lived and traveled in Germany for 6 years so I am looking for other places we can travel to out of Germany so we can both see new places. She has a car or we can take a train - I will be there 10 days so we can stay other places for several days. Any suggestions?

Here are some places that are not too far from Frankfurt and are worth a visit:
-Mainz (city with a famous dome, nice to walk around)
- Taunus (beautiful forest region very close to Frankfurt, if you like walking in forests)
- Limburg (beautiful town with small streets and typical old German houses
- Rothenburg (")
- Wuerzburg (nice town with a castle)
- Take a trip on the Rhine, see some wine places (Eltville, Ruedesheim)

If you want to travel further (and are willing to spent some nights in other towns): go to Munich, Regensburg, Fuessen and the south of Bavaria.

Enjoy your stay!

Depending on whether you like to do see things in detail or not - I would try catching a ICE train over to Dresden, train to Prague and then to Vienna. Depending on what you're both interested in doing/seeing you could alter the trip and build in another city or say Dresden - Berlin - Warsaw etc. I would make use of the train network in Germany - if you buy rail passes outside of the EU it is quite cheap compared to inside the EU. It is also an anti stress way to see the countryside - no road rage and no getting lost...

Re: Frankfurt-Dresden-Berlin-Warsaw for Mike:
I actually haven't been to Warsaw yet but have it on my summer to do list so I can't help you on Warsaw. However I have done most of Germany by train and also did Frankfurt-Dresden-Prague by train last summer and can give you some tips on those legs and on hotels in those cities if you're interested. While in Germany - I strongly recommend catching the ICE trains and also first class if you can afford it. It's actually quite affordable if you buy eurail tickets in 4 days or more and is a really great way to travel in or thro Germany...
