France in August - where to go with 6 children 8 - 10??
Trying to put together an itinerary for travel in August with 6 school aged children. We have one week in Luberon and three days in Paris planned. What to do/where to go for the second week. Any suggestions? Brittony? The Loire?

Do you visit the Luberon first of Paris first?? Why such a short time in Paris??? What is your mode of transportation?
Brittany & the Luberon are far apart. You can take a train from Rennes to Avignon - but with 8 people that could get costly. I would not want to drive it with 8 people in the car.
You/they could get bored with a week in the Loire with kids that might not enjoy Chateaux that much.
The kids & you might really enjoy the Dordogne - but August is a rough time to be there with all the crowds - unless it is the last week in August (we've been there then).

There is a wonderful B&B called LaBeauconniere, and from there you can explore the D-day beaches, Mont St. Michele, and more. This place would be great for you and the 6 children. Take a look at their website www.beauconniere.com. The Anglo-American couple who own and run the place have 3 children, along with horses to ride, friendly dogs to play with, and it's a lovely place to stay, assuming you're driving. We've stayed there and drove easily to many sites in the area. Their website gives more details.

Kids do love Carcassonne. My dad specifically took us there when we were 8 and 5, with the idea that kids love it. Nearly 40 years later, we still remember it fondly.
What about Parc Asterix or Disneyland Paris? I will confess that I have never been to either place but they figure heavily on DS's bucket list.

Carcassonne is an excellent half-way stopping destination on the drive from Provence to the Dordogne. Great 3 hr (max) visit.
Kids love the Dordogne also - with the canoe & boat trips on the Dordogne River, castles, caves, medieval costumes/jousting exhibitions, Birds of Prey show at Ch Milandes, etc.

(Dordogne continued)...water park at Audrix, night markets that are easier on kids than restaurants (some have bouncy houses and donkey cart rides!), monkey forest and another fantastic bird show at Rocamadour (Lot, not Dordogne, but decent day trip), prehisto park, cave boat ride at Padirac, cave train at Rouffignac, multiple firework shows, carnivals...
There's a small aquarium somewhere too...
So, it will be crowded, but for good reasons!

I was reading this as I am traveling with a kid myself, and I would agree the Dordogne and the Lot are amazing. However, the Loire is quite interesting too.
As I was reading a lot on the Loire and we are going back for a few days again for the 3rd time, I would like to add:
- renting rowing boat at Chenonceau castle was very pleasant and the day can be spent there, people were swimming in the river and bring a picnic.
- Chambord has equestrian shows twice a day, the castle grounds are free and a picnic can be had there.
- Blois has fencing shows, and I read some other castles are having in season as well
- our son enjoyed Cheverny with Tintin, dogs and gardens; the castle itself is small and just fun to visit with kids.
- Also in Blois there is the house of magic
- In Saumur there is Cadre Noir and also armoured car museum
- At Angers airport there is a plane museum
- In Amboise Clos Luce was a great success with our son
- Puy du fou in Cholet is a fantastic theme parc
- Zoo de Beauval
- Chaumont with its gardens festivals and stables
- mini castles close to Amboise, although touristy, it can be enjoyable by kids
- Futuroscope is a bit far in Poitier and might be of interest
- Valencay has a few kids activities like corn maze but also there are carts to rent
- Langeais is interesting to visit
- markets and medieval fares
I am pretty sure I am not covering all the attractions, but there are a lot of things to visit in the Loire.
Also, in the Loire things are more spread. Of course we didn't visit the inside of big castles for hours, but our son enjoyed a lot Chenonceau and Cheverny. I have to mention the Loire can also be busy in season.
I just wanted to share, so people can find the Loire attractions with kids.
