Just a short update. I had a below the knee amputation on my left leg about a year ago. I received a prosthetic leg in June and have been learning to walk on it. I also lost my inner ear functions (vertigo) due to an antiseptic (vancomycan) and have very little sense of balance so need to walk with a walker. For the immediate future, I will not be able to travel to Europe due to this so have bought a Class A Motor home (a 40 foot Mandalay) and will be traveling the US and Canada some more. Am retired now so am selling my house and will be living in the RV to travel as much as I can.

Art Hussey

Hey Art! So glad you checked in! Sorry to hear about your medical problems, but it sounds as if they're not slowing you down too much. Let us know if you plan to drive through the Bay Area so we can arrange a mini-GTG. Merry Christmas!

Hi Art, I am so glad that you are not letting health obstacles stand in your way. It will be so nice to be able to travel around in your motor home and see North America.
Happy travels and keep us updated on your whereabouts!
Hello Art,
Wishing you all the best. Enjoy your travels and let us know where you go!
Happy holidays to you!
Best wishes, Art.
Dear Art, So glad to know that you still plan to enjoy traveling again. Please send me a note if you would like a GTG whenever you come up to Toronto area.
Best Wishes and Happy Holidays.
What a way to go , Art! That RV is bigger than some houses I've seen!
You can GTG all over the country now!
Thanks for the update, Art. Glad to hear that you are still able and willing to travel, at least domestically. My in-laws are currently doing the RV thing as well, and loving every minute of it.
Take care of yourself and keep us updated from time to time.
Where there's a will, there's a way! Keep rollin', Art, and may God bless you on your travels.
Hi Art,
Yes, I do remember you and miss your posts!
I hope your adventures won't be like Jack Nicholson's in that movie w/Kathy Bates--someone help me with the title!
Hope you feel good and look forward to your posts on the US board.
OWJ
Hi Art,
What fun! Now just add a dog to your RV and you'll be like John Steinbeck seeing America. Does anybody else remember TRAVELS WITH CHARLIE?
Let us know when you head south.
Byrd
It's great to know you are on the move again Art. Best of luck and enjoy your travels across NOrth America.
OWJ, it's "About Schmidt"...
Art, I'd be happy to join JudyC for a Toronto gathering if you are in the Toronto area.
Good luck.
Hi Art,
I had such a great time talking with you at the San Diego GTG and have been wondering about you. I'm glad to hear you're travel-bound once again. Will you have a laptop with you so you can keep us posted over on the US board?
I wish you the best of luck on your adventures.
Jocelyn
I always remember how kind you were when I happened to post once from LA while visiting there, and you emailed to see if I wanted to attend a Fodorite gathering at your home. It was a kind and caring thing to do, and we greatly enjoyed the day.
Best of luck to you. It just shows you can't keep a good man down!
Good luck, Art. You were always helpful to me in your past postings. I am glad you are well and ready to keep on travelling. Good health to you in the New Year 2005. (2004 was a HORRIBLE year for me, so I am glad it is going to be over soon.)
Cheers,
John G.
Hey, Art - great to hear from you.
So okay, you know what this means... Trip Reports!
So where first?
Hey Art, Good to hear from you. Now you can be like Charles Kuralt and give us periodic stories of your travels from your RV. Try not to miss beautiful Amelia Island FL and historic Fernandina Beach and give me a holler before you come.
Good for you! I wish you the very BEST and SAFEST travels . . . and that you keep us on your email list for updates.
Buena suerte,
Sandy (in Denton)
Happy travels to you, Art. And I agree the dog would make it perfect! And do get a laptop to keep us posted about your travel adventures.
Hi Art
best wishes!
If you do trip reports on the US and Canada, let us on the Europe message board know so we'll know to check them out.
Hello Art,
It's good to see you here at Fodors once again.
I look forward to many, many trip reports.
Spring time in Louisville is grand, we celebrate it with a little horse race.
Stop by for a mint julep.
Judy
Dear Art
You know that Europe misses you hugely, but it's so good to know you're still living the travel dream and will enjoy so many wonderful experiences and the freedom of the open road in that magnificent RV. More a castle than a house on wheels I'm sure you'll have a great time.
Take care
Kavey
It's so nice to hear from you, Art. I hope you have a lot of fun with your new home. I'm looking forward to the trip reports! You will be the designated checker-outer-of-places-we-don't-know-much-about in the US and Canada.
Drive safely.
Hi, Art. Oh, yes, I remember you quite well from the San Diego GTG. I enjoyed your photographs and the commentary. You are a perfect combination of an old soul and a young spirit. Wish you the best in your future adventures. Please keep in touch.
Sounds like you are making the best of the situation Art. I am sure you will have a blast driving around North America!
Art,
Have fun in the RV. I don't need to tell you that, I know you will. You can start haunting the US forum!
And I bet you anything with time and your incredable determination you will get back to Budapest or Germany or wherever you want to go over the pond.
Wow! That's very impressive! Looks like nothing can stop your travels!
Have a wonderful time travelling in the US. My mother's retired neighbors took their RV to all 50 states ( oops, except Hawaii) in the past several years. And then there is Canada!
Talk about indomitable! I hope you have a great time doing the RV thing -- and judging from your usual positive attitude about travelling, I'm sure you will.
Art, have a great time ... and as suggested, what about a regular RV report. I remember you as a great poster. Happy 2005!!!!
Have fun on your travels. If you're ever in the area, stop by. My Aunt and Uncle had an RV (though not as long as yours) and enjoyed traveling around in it for years.
We never met, but remember some of your travel posts, I think. I am so glad you are around and hopefully adapting well after your health problems. My brother had some problem with his inner ear, also, but it eventually got a little better.
As for the RV, there are some great RV movies -- in addition to About Schmidt, one of my favorites is "Lost in America" with Julie Hagerty and Albert Brooks. Try to rent that, it's really funny.
Be sure to visit New Mexico and SW Colorado, I love that area and the vistas are beautiful.
Art,
My dad is a "liveaboard" and he really enjoys it (and he was not the traveler in the family)
He "lives" in Florida, but as he puts it his home goes where he goes. (You do become an expert in organization with these homes, even the Class A's don't have a ton of storage space.)
Sounds like a reason for GTG's all over the place. We started IN/KY/OH last March, so a "second annual" would be in order - - if you can/wish to be in this part of the country anytime in the spring, I'd be thrilled to plan it around you as our guest of honor.
Other Ohio River Valley Fodorites?
Best wishes,
Rex
another RV movie, an oldie
It starred Lucy and Desi, and was called The Long Long Trailer.
You can imagine.
Good to hear from you, Art. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year of traveling and traveling and traveling . . .
Art, I've enjoyed 2 little motor homes. Traveled lots into beautiful western US and Canada. It's the best way to see those desert parks: Arches, Grand Canyon, Kananaskis are my favs. Happy trails.
Art: I still vividly recall when we were driving across Poland listening to the radio and not being able to decipher what the heck they were talking about only to discover later that evening in Gdansk that terrorists had flown into the World Trade Center. I'm glad we were traveling together during those first few uncertain days after the attack. I wish you well and hope your travels are problem free. "May the road rise up to meet you!!" Keep in touch.
Bon Voyage Art! I hope our paths will cross some day, at least to exchange a couple of russian phrases - I remember your post about learning the language.
How are you going to stay in touch with us? Post on Fodor's? E-mail somebody who can post for you? Phone? Letters?
Don't even think of not staying in touch!
And a Grand RV it is too

Scarlett
Art, when you "land" in Florida, email me...we will have to say hello!
I will be watching for Art On The Road reports here on Fodors
Bighugs, Happy Holidays
Hello Art, On a serious note, may I ask if you meant to write vancomycin, which is an antibiotic? If so, my goodness, you must have been very ill. I have enough knowledge about vancomycin to know the seriousness of your problem.
My heartfelt, best wishes to a full recovery and a full active life.
Art, WOW!! I only joined Fodors sometime this last spring and so consequently did not have the pleasure of reading any of your post.
But after reading this thread it seems to me that you are going to have a better 2005 than any Fodorite here.
It appears you have friends all over the US. And with your RV and your positive attitude toward life I would imagine that this next year is going to be very special for you.
I too will look forward to your trip report. Happy Holiday and a joyous 2005 to you and your loved ones.
Art,
I certainly remember you and enjoyed being at one of the Southern Calif get togethers at your home a few years ago. I also REALLY enjoyed that dessert you made! It was delicious!
Enjoy your travels and best of health to you.
Happy Holidays,
Susan
Hi, Art--the RV is, indeed, a beauty! I'm expecting you to swing my way when the weather breaks!
You are going to have a lot of fun, Art, as you travel around the U.S.A! Please let me know when you are in the lower part of southeast Michigan. Until then, all the best to you!
What a great spirit. Happy travels and happy holidays.
I sure do remember you Art and am very pleased to hear that you are doing well and planning to travel again. We stayed away from Europe this year, not for any particular reason, and instead made five trips in the US. We had a wonderful time. Visited new places and returned to places we hadn't been for years. It was terrific. Know you will have great adventures too.
Happy Holidays and happy travels when you hit the road again!
Best wishes on your travels. I remember a couple of GTGs at your home. You'll brighten up the crowd wherever you go. Have a great time.
Diane
Welcome back, Art!
Art, I've read many of your posts in the past. Glad to hear you're not letting your health problems keep you down! Hope you continue to improve.
Hello, Art!!! Nice to hear from you and about your plans. Enjoy that RV .... people we knew loved their travels in one, and met so many good people. Take care, have a great holiday and a prosperous New Year. Fodors could use your reports, so give us the gift in '05.
My goodness, I'm overwhelmed with these responses. I did not think that so many would remember me as it has been quite a while since I posted.
Yes I_AM_KANE it was vancomycin and I was in pretty bad shape for a while. I really feel good now and am trying herbal medicines now to see if they will help. I am still getting therapy 3 times a week to continue building me up.
I am having a computer desk put into my RV and it is pre-wired for satellite connection for both TV and Internet so I will be staying in touch.
I have a commitment to teaching a couple of evenings a week for another 3 months then will be moving to Portland.
I will be posting my first trip report on the US forum within the n ext few hours.
Dear Art,
Hope you are doing better. My travel friend. Had arthoscopic surgery of his shoulder. Minor surger, The hospital have him vancomycin also. But did not tell him. He has ringing in his ears and has hearing loss. Did you know of the possible side effects
Has anything you tried helped. If It has let me know.
Thanks
There's no nice way to say this. Unfortunately, Art died.
Very sad news about Art...may he be in peace now.
