I can't say I've ever liked Lancashire Hotpot, but we never saw what went into Betty's Hotpot. It might have been code for all sorts of shenanigans for all I know.

Why would anyone in Britain drink in a fake Rovers' Return when there's no shortage of real dismal street-corner pubs going out of business every day because no-one wants to patronise them?

In a Florida Ye Notveryolde Englishe theme park, or a Costa del Sawnoff Shotgun gaff for extradition-shy retired bank robbers possibly. But who can seriously imagine Brityouth boozing themselves silly on a Saturday night in Reading at something out of Coronation Street?

Of course, it might be the height of glamour in Reading.

There's a poxy o'Neils on every high st with their fake paddy menu and gardening tools on the wall.

I would rather put tinfoil in my fillings than patronise them but they are obviously profitable.

Having said that, all the actual paddies are in Rover's return type pubs reading the Racing Post.

I love it when one pub owner said OK as long as i don't have to hire Bet Lynch - the infamous Bet Lynch and i believe the most memorable of all the legends of barkeeps at the Rovers

The scheme seems too hard to realize however for questionable returns

also surprised that Corrie is still the number one TV show in England

Seems when this was talked about once before here nearly no FodorBrits confessed to watching, showing perhaps how out of the mainsream FodorBrits may be.

nearly every B&amp;B lady i've run into and i've seen dozens thru the years are Coronation Street fans. Never has one said no.

The people who spend a fortune monitoring TV viewing indicate that CSis the most popular television program with around 10-12 million viewers per episode. Population of 60 million means 80% of Brits don't watch it.

It is a complete mystery to me as are Emmerdale, Eastenders, Casualty and every other &quot;Soap&quot;. Increasingly my viewing is restricted to the Channel 4 news, and some sporting events. I don't claim to be mainstream.

Yes but most Britons don't run B+Bs. If they did, where would they get their customers from, since everyone else would be running a B+B instead of laughing at B+B landladies' bizarre taste in candlewick bedspreads and fitted nylon sheets?

I'm more than happy to concede that 999 out of 1000 B+B ladies watch The Street. The rest of us have less important things to do.

don't get me wrong - nothing wrong with being outside of the mainstream

I rarely watch any American TV series or things like Idol or Survivor - smash hits, for the same reasons you don't 'waste' time watching Corrie. Or i may occasionally tune in just to see what all the hubbub is about

I have nothing against mass culture but just would rather would news programs or listen to NPR or BBC, etc. Different strokes for different folks

It would seem perhaps that the Coronation Street crowd and soccer fans may coincide quite well - soccer fans i bet are big Corrie watchers?

Being a B&amp;B landlady must mean a lot of hanging around waiting for customers. Got to fill the time somehow: and you need to learn some memorably amusing character quirks from somewhere.

Back in the days when I did all that for a living, women outnumbered men among Street viewers about 4:1. Which was roughly the mirror image of football viewership.

Overlap betwen the two audiences used to be about the same as between KKK membership and attenders at an Obama rally.
