I've had another thread about a 3 week trip to Italy in 2007. So far we've gotten some very good help, but I thought I'd start another thread for specific information.
We've decided to fly into Northern Italy then travel south and leave from Naples.
Of the 3 cities, Florence, Milan or Venice; which would be the best city to make our base for our first week? I'm assuming I can fly into each of these cities?
Second, we may need to go to the city of Cesenatico, which of these 3 would be the best base point to get to Cesenatico the easiest. Mind you, we'll be traveling with 3 2 year olds.
Thanks again for all of the help,
Paul

Certainly not Milano. It will cost you a fortune.
Carless Venice might be my choice with small children. Rent an apartment to keep down costs.
You could also fly into Bologna, which would put you into a very good position to get to Cesenatico. I hope you will go to Ravenna while you are in that vicinity.
What I might recommend is flying into Venice, getting your bearings there for 5 days and then rent a car. Visit Cesenatic and Ravenna, and drive the car to your next destination.
Do you still want both Rome and Naples? Or are you considering some time in the countryside?
Yes, Rome and Naples are still important destinations for us. We will most likely stay in Sorrento and do day trips to Naples and the surrounding area.
Is the train the best Idea from Venice to Rome then to Sorrento?

We, too, are taking a 3-weeker in Northern Italy and are flying into Venice from Philadelphia, but have not decided yet from which city to depart. Our last few days will be spent just south of the Piedmonte region, but will have an extra 2-3 days before we fly home. Any suggestions about whether to take off from Genoa - or Milan? We were hoping to see a bit of the coast, actually, but probably want to take the least expensive option.
GRAZIE!
If you want to see a bit of the coast, trains run regularly from the areas south of Genova, so while you'd have to get back to Milan the night before your flight, you could still spend some time near the water.
Genova has a limited number of flights, but it is quite a convenient airport if you are staying in Camogli (my fave) or Portofino or points between Genova and the French border.
If you spend your last few days in the Cinque Terre area with a car, you can also look into the possibility of flying out of Pisa, and even spending a night in Pisa before departing Italy.
Also, if the cheapest option is out of Milano and you have a car, check into the possibility of spending your last night in Italy on Lago Maggiore or Lago d'Orta.
