Flying into Barcelona out of Rome...is Moscow a good idea?

Hi!

We are a mid-40s couple on our first trip to Europe with our teenager kid, traveling from South America, next March 8th 2014. We cannot decide weather to:

1) Do the Côte d'Azur by car (too freezing? few to see?)
2) Add 2 flights to visit Berlin and Moscow (this is my husband's idea but I fly all the time at work and would not like to jump into a plane every 3-days during holidays!! ... )
3) Add 1 flight to Berlin and then take a car to visit Prague and Budapest before getting to Rome.

Once in Italy, by train, we plan to do Florence and Venice before Rome...

What do you think? What would you do? THANKS!!!

Personally I think Moscow is a whole other holiday. It's almost 1500 miles from Rome.
That's a heck of a side trip!

You don’t say how much total time you have to spend, which might help you get some better ideas. However, my vote would be to go from Spain to the Cote d’Azur, using Nice as a base. That part of France at that time of the year can be cool, but certainly nowhere near as cold as either Berlin or Moscow!

Moscow should be something 3.45 hours flying from Rome. Generally speaking, getting visas for Russia is such a pain that short trips are not worth the trouble.

How much total time do you have on the ground in Europe? Are you spending any time in Spain, since you are landing there?

I think you are doing too much. Moscow needs at least 3 nights and you need a visa, which is quite expensive. Even without Moscow it's a very busy itinerary.

Depending on the amount of time you have, Berlin might be a nice variant from Barcelona and Rome. I would not drive, but take the train to Dresden for a couple of days--returning to Berlin at the end of the second day. You probably can find a low cost flight in and out of Berlin.

When you are going is still late winter - and definitely Moscow and very probably Prague, Budapest and even Berlin are going to be quite cold and even have substantial snow. Are you prepared for dealing with that weather - and a visa for Russia (not sure where else you need a visa for).

Weather should be better in Barcelona, southern France (but NOT beach weather - and there is a lot to see/do) and quite a bit of Italy. But you can still get chilly temps and rain anywhere.

Without knowing how much time you have to spend it's difficult to make specific recos.
