Flowers-Gardens in Ireland in May?

Here in the Midwest of the USA the weather has been cold and flower buds are late this year, whereas last year was very warm and everything bloomed early.

That said,we'll be in Ireland in Mid May and I'm wondering if there will be any flowers out at this time?

Yes, particularly in the southwest where there are palm trees and the gulf stream moves in close.

Thanks for the response JOHNOD. We'll be in the Midlands and then Cobh, Kinsale,& Kilkenny.

We were in the Southwest in Sept.'10 and the weather was better than we expected. I guess we liked it, because we are returning in 8 months time!

We travel in Europe every Sept. but this will be our first spring trip.

The gorse will be blooming and covering the hillsides with yellow amongst the green. Everyone will have their flowerboxes filled. May is gorgeous!

TPAYT, May should be perfect was viewing gardens – especially those front and rear gardens gracing most private homes no matter how modest. Driving through the towns you will see a profusion of flowers in hanging pots and widow boxes. Ireland holds “tidy town” competitions which they take seriously. Of course, Irish weather lends itself to a productive growing season. From my experience, few countries in Europe have the abundance and variety of flora that Ireland does. And let us not forget the new lambs you will see on every hillside….

If you are travelling between Kilkenny and Dublin, try to work in a visit to Mount Usher gardens in County Wicklow en route.
In the midlands, Birr Castle gardens are worth seeing - and not much of a diversion if you are travelling south to Cork.

Winter has been unusually severe this year and there has been some major losses of semi hardy plants; you may be looking at some terminal stage pyracantha and grisellinia hedges on your travels!

We're marking Birr Castle and some of the gardens listed on that web site. We hope to take a little time to explore.

Ireland is a beautiful country and we so enjoy just taking our time and poking around. Some of the "out of the Way" places are better than the major tourist sites.

Travel on!

I think spring the perfect time to travel. All that spring green and flowers. Moderate temperatures. Smaller crowds. And longer days so you have more time to see things -- and not get lost.
