They're all pretty safe, except maybe in the neighborhood immediately next to the train station (both cities).

I suggest you try a Fodors search on, say, Venice, to get dozens of good suggestions from this board -- there is lots of info already posted.

Hi
Do as suggested a search on this board, the Rants and Raves Section as well, or you can search for accommodations at
www.venere.it
The train station areas in Florence and Venice are not the most attractive, but they are busy and not statistically unsafe, at least not compared with big cities in the US or Europe.

The hotel Casci in Florence has been praised on this board and it is near the train station. Try doing a search here on that one.
Ditto on the Casci. Wonderful place! We had a quad room a few years ago...nothing fancy, but clean and safe and quiet...the absolutely best part of the hotel is the staff...truly wonderful people! Plus the hotel is very centrally located.

We stayed at Albergo Guerrato in Venice--about 1 minute from the Rialto Bridge. It was delightful and inexpensive (about $75 for a double-5 years ago). It is not much to look at outside, but is very clean and comfortable. And Roberto and Piero are friendly and helpful with local recommendations for dining. Telephone 041 522 7131. Jinx Hoover
