Florence to Sorrento
We have our itinerary almost finalized. We will be travelling from Florence to spend 3 nights in Sorrento, before heading back to Rome to fly back to Canada.
What is the best way to get from Florence to Sorrento?
Does anyone know how long the train ride would be?
If we fly- it looks like we would fly Florence to Naples, and then train to Sorrento?
Thanks!
Pam

Pam - The best way is by train.
Quickest journey time is just over 3.5 hrs by Eurostar (€ 42.50) to Napoli Centrale. For timetables go to:
www.trenitalia.com
From Napoli Centrale it's another 70 mins by local train (CIRCUMVESUVIANA) to Sorrento. Departures are every 30 minutes:
http://www.massalubrense.it/circum.htm
[The Circumvesuviana station is below Napoli Centrale station - follow the signs downstairs].
Flying will not save you any time.
Hope this helps ...

Hi H,
If you do fly, there is bus service from Naples airport to Sorrento.

We took the Eurostar from Florence to Naples in June, then the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento. We found the Circumvesuviana to be terribly crowded and hot. We were standing most of the trip with three kids and the luggage. For our return trip we hired a driver and it was money well spent.

We did this in the other direction in May -- train is just so simple, but of course, when you board in Sorrento, you're boarding at the end of the line, so seats are completely empty. Steve James has the times just about right.
All you need to be aware of is where the Circumvesuviana leaves from in the Naples station -- which is downstairs and "to the left" and there are fairly visible signs -- and to stay alert while in the station for pickpockets, gypsy "mothers with babies" begging, etc. It's not scary or overwhelming, just be prudent.
Also, if you plan to take the Circumvesuviana back to Naples on the way to Rome, it's efficient (but not necessary) to get a return ticket.
If you aren't traveling at the end of the work day, on Friday, or after a strike, you may be able to avoid serious crowding. The last third of the trip is so pretty that it's almost worth it for that.
