We will be in Florence for a few days and then would like to spend 5-6 days in Positano. Is there a train we can take to avoid Alitalia and the airport in Florence.

You cannot take the train all the way to Positano, but you can get close and then take a bus, ferry or private car to Positano (you can't fly to Positano either). If you search Amalfi Coast on this forum, there will be numerous posts on the topic, some in the last couple of days. My recommendation would be to take the train to Salerno and then ferry to Positano, or train to Naples and take a private car to Positano.
Thanks, nothing comes up under Alamfi Coast...I'll keep on looking
Check the spelling, Amalfi instead of Alamfi, and there is a lot of information.
sorry for the typo....still no info comes up
Hi Dorie - For train timetables to Naples or Salerno see:
http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html
From SALERNO you can reach Positano by ferry (- 70 mins). For details:

.....
From NAPLES you can reach Positano by limo, hydrofoil or public transport:
- LIMO:
For a limo transfer (- € 100 approx) the following have all been recommended here:

- HYDROFOIL:
Timetables are on:
www.metrodelmare.com
- PUBLIC TRANSPORT from Naples:
- take the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento (- journey time 1 hr., deps. every 30 mins), then
- Sita bus (- 45 mins) Sorrento- Positano. Timetables on:

Hope this helps ...
Steve
The SITA bus terminus is just outside the entrance of the Sorrento train station. In 2002 after not getting any assistance from the disinterested slob at the train counter I found out elsewhere I had to buy tickets in the Sorrento centre (200 or 300m) to validate on the bus. The driver did not handle cash. It may have changed now (I don't know about the apathetic train employee though).
Hi D,

When I entered <Amalfi Coast> in the "search this forum" box, I got at least 100 hits, and that was only back to June 23.
Thanks everyone for all of your help
Thanks Ira, I tried again and success!!
I guess we will drive down, 5 hrs if we are lucky. Planning for next July, I can't wait.....
