Florence and Rome Accomodation
Hi there guys,
I was wondering if anyone could recommend places you enjoyed staying and visiting in Florence and Rome? I'll be on my honeymoon.... Itinerary thus far is.....
(I have been to both places before as a backpacker my partner has never been to italy)
We're into simple and authentic... nothing too modern
Venice: 4 nights
Locanda Orseolo Delux suite overlooking the Orseolo canal
(our honeymoon super splurge!) yay!
Florence: 2 nights
Nothing yet booked.... recommendations please!
Tuscan Olive Farm: 7 nights
Podere La Rota
Todi (Umbrian Hilltop Village): 6nights
Medieval apartment in middle of village....
Not sure what to get out and see there... recommendations please!

When we visited Florence we found that staying in an agriturismo (B&B is the countryside) halfway between Florence and Siena was the perfect solution. The views along the way are quite stunning and it means you can avoid the noise and expense of a hotel in Florence. There are parking lots on the outskirts where you can leave your car and walk into the city. Our favourite is Casa Nova near Greve in Chianti, worth a visit in itself, particularly the Antica Macelleria Falorni delicatessan on the main square. Ask for a room with a terrace and enjoy a glass of Poggio ai Mori chianti as the sun sets over the Tuscan landscape.
In Florence, we had a surprisingly good (and reasonably priced) lunch at La Galleria on via Guicciardini, away from the crowds and dinner at Il Cantone di Guelfo where the staff was friendly and we ate an excellent bistecca alla fiorentina. Another time, we ate at Enoteca San Augustino, now called Enoteca Mondovino, on the other side of the Arno, where I ate a porcini mushroom the size of a plate! I’ve been trying to repeat the experience ever since but to no avail.
The Duomo is worth visiting at different times during the day to capture the changing light. Best to reserve your tickets to the Uffizi museum on-line if you want to save your feet for Botticelli and Fra Lippo Lippi. There are many commercial sites which are considerably more expensive so make sure you use the official site. http://www.b-ticket.com/b-ticket/uffizi/default.aspx Michelangelo’s David is in a separate building, the Galleria dell’Accademia. And do go up to Fiesole to get a magnificent view of the city.

Congrats CharlotteRose on your upcoming honeymoon!
Living in Rome, we often drove to Florence for weekends. Many times stayed at this B&B (below) because it was outside the ZTL areas and easy to get to (by car from Rome)... It's about a 10 minute walk from the Academia or you can jump on the local bus. It's a wonderful B&B and a little removed from the touristy area of Florence which might be great on a honeymoon!

In Rome, as it's your partner's first time... I'd try and stay downtown in the centro area. From there you can walk and experience the city - especially at night. As your budget is 120€, you may have to search a little... but here are some recommendations for the "best-rated" accommodations in central Rome according to booking & venere guests.

These are all different price ranges and types of accommodations so maybe you can find one that you prefer. For a little less money and still plenty of atmosphere you might try looking in Trastevere. Here are a few examples of options there:

If price becomes a bigger issue, you could consider the Vatican area. We've lived here for years and enjoy the "quietness" and local feel of the area (after 6 pm when the Vatican Museums close). There are not as many hotels in this area, but there are many, many B&B's - and most are among the top-rated in the city. Take a look at this link for some lower cost suggestions.

Finally, if it comes down to budget, and budget alone, you can look near the Roma Termini train station. Perhaps not where I'd suggest on a honeymoon... but you are in Rome!
There are more than 350 "hotels" in this condensed area and great transportation links (to get you out). It's safe, but certainly not as "pretty" as other parts of the city.

Lots of people tend to think that if you stay near the termini station that you are staying in a not so good area. We stayed about a 15 minute walk to the termini station and it was a lovely area in a beautiful hotel which only had about 8 rooms. It used to be an apartment block which converted to a hotel. Many hotels in Rome are old apartment blocks. It was absolutely beautiful and like staying in a rich persons home but for 4 night it was 1100 euros. We also stayed in San Gimmiagno in tuscany which had easy access to florence, sienna and Pisa. But your budget does call for b&bs OR why dont you try a MONESTARY STAY. They are very cheap and clean and very popular right now and i think they usually include breakfast. Just google Monestary stays and they will come up all over italy.

We liked Domus Julia in Rome, a nice little B&B type hotel, just below the Barberini Palace and very near the Spanish Steps, at via Rasella 32.
And in Florence we liked the Relais Cavalcanti. a very charming little 'hotel', at Via Pellicceria, 2, close to center of town and the Arno.

I stayed at 111 B&B in Rome (2010) and highly recommend it. The location is within easy walk to the Vatican, Castel Sant´Angelo, Piazza del Popolo, Borghesi Gardens. Within one afternoon I walked from the B&B to Campo Di Fioro - Piazza Navona - Trevi Fountain - Pantheon - Spanish Steps - Piazza del Popolo - B&B.

We recently returned from Florence and stayed at the hotel L' orlogio. Fantastic location, (walkable from SMN station) in the heart of Plaza Santa Maria Novella ' close to some great sites and restuarants. The price was excellent too compared to some of the over priced options in Florence. I would recommend in a heartbeat. ( breakfast was included in the rate too)
I also recommend Franscesco Vini restaurant ( do book ahead) close to the Ufitzi, lovely, buzzy little place. Great food ( over worked but friendly waitress) and Il Santo belviatore ( open on a Sunday night too) a MUST pre book. Favourite restaurant in Florence and both an easy walk from the hotel.

Just returned from Florence and stayed in Pensione Pendini overlooking Piazza Repubblica. Short walk from Santa Maria Novella station and around the corner from the Duomo. A little noisy on weekend nights due to bars and nightclubs nearby but if you're just getting married, you may be young enough to be in that crowd 
. Rather reasonable when we booked on hotels.com. If looking for a great, but reasonable dinner, try Trattoria Pandemonio in the Oltrarno, via del Leone 50/r. Ate there one night on a suggestion and went back a second night out of sheer delight. Tell Mama I said hello and enjoy the limoncello!

We loved Locanda Orseolo in Venice. It was very very comfortable and the staff took good care of us. I hope you enjoy it.
In Rome, we have stayed twice at Hotel San Carlo which is between the Spanish Steps and Via del Corso. We prefer not to be in the hectic and busy Piazza Navonna area but only a short walk away. Most people on this forum seem to like the activity near Piazza Navonna, but we like the quiet.
