Hi,

I'm headed to Avignon on Thursday for a week bike trip through Provence...I am hearing that the city is flooded. Is there anything to be concerned about?

Martha:
the area hardest hit is the Gard department, which is west of the Rhône river, and where Peter took these impressive pictures.
Avignon and surroundings are fine.

Hi - This is terrible. Selfishly, I'm heading to Languedoc in October for a week long stay in a rented home. (My dream vacation by the way.) How might this impact my trip? Anything I should be prepared for as far as building/monuments being closed for cleaning, reconstruction?

And noticing the bridge that was ruined. Are you aware of a location/site I can visit to ensure that we're aware of any road damage/bridges?

Thank you,
Julie

According to French TV, the only longer term damages are some bridges on secondary railway lines (namely Nimes-Ales). ANd even for them, we are only talking less than one month's repair. The storms seem to have been very violent but isolated. So you should be OK. If you can read French, check out www.liberation.fr of Le Midi Libre's (local newspaper) web site (which I don't know, sorry)

Hi

Things should be OK by October. The authorities are good at clearing up quickly. These floods happen annually, but this is worse than usual.

I've just come back from Sommieres. There are upturned cars, lorries and debris piled together in the mud.
Emergency services have been called in from a wide area.

more pics (Sommieres) :

http://reunir30.free.fr/vidourlade_2002/vidourlade_2002.shtml

Peter
