flights to Brussels
Anyone have information , thoughts on the least expensive way to get from JFK to Brussels?
Its very expensive connecting with domestic carriers about $1000!
Is direct to Paris or LHR and local carrier better?

Where are you coming from? Connecting through JFK - or coming from JFK to start with. (The first thing I would do is check EWR).
Are you using the various airfare search engines?
If you're talking summer, $1k is NOT expensive.

What you are asking can be found on your own using booking engines without others trying to guess in different directions the key elements making up the fares.
Fares are market based. If there are others willing to do the same thing at the same time, you will have to compete for a seat and the airlines are set up to capture the most revenue possible. If the route is business oriented, the days and the hours the business people travel will be priced to extract the maximum out of those people. Similarly for vacation oriented routes and so on.
You can easily compare fares over different time period on same route.
You can easily compare fares over same time period on different routes. Do you have to fly JFK to Brussels? Does your itinerary include other major European cities you can start trip instead?

You can also opportunistically wait for the last minutes off season offers. This tend to happen at undesirable time of the year (that is usually the reason for the lack of demand) and you have to buy tickets quickly for a trip just few weeks away (another reason airlines have to discount this type of fare -- who would pay full prices for rush rush planned trips?)
