Flights from US to Paris or London not using a US carrier

After our last trip, DH has vowed not to use a US carrier again. I read some bad reviews about Air France. Can anyone tell me of a carrier they have used which was not too objectionable. We will probably have to fly in "steerage" since business appears to be double what economy is. Any thoughts or suggestions? Any positive experiences? Just want a comfortable seat, some leg room and the person in front of him not laying in his lap.
We can always bring our own food.
