Flamenco & Resturants in Seville

Im am going to be in Seville from Dec 27th - Jan 2nd. I would love any suggestions of local (non-touristy) Flamenco and also any suggestions of the best places to eat. We can do fancy or just really delicious!
We live in New York City and are people who love to eat out an excellent restaurants. That said, we really are looking for authentic and uniquely Sevillian places.
Any and all info is appreciated.

Thank you!!

"authentic and uniquely Sevillian places" There are many, but it will depend on the type of authentic & unique cuisine you're interested in. You can try Restaurante Egaña Oriza (www.restauranteoriza.com), one of the Robles restaurants (www.casa-robles.com), or Taberna del Alabardero (www.tabernadelalabardero.es). But there are many more to choose from. Just remember that you'll need to make reservations, especially during the holidays, and that most places will be closed on New Years Day.

For more information on dining and flamenco, you should check out www.exploreseville.com

We spent 3 or 4 nights in Seville and thought the food at Vineria San Telmo excellent. Look up its reviews on Trip Advisor, it is rated highly and not very expensive. Quick walk in old quarter. Loved Seville..... We too live in NYC area so are used to lots of selections with varied prices. Another one of interest was San Marco (Italian food), located in an ancient Arabian bathhouse. For heaven sake, do not miss the Metropol Parasol, the latest architectural wonder of the city.

Realize that Seville has its own sub-genre of Flamenco (some say it's not even Flamenco) called "Sevillanas". It's lighter, more melodious/mellifluous and more choreographed (less spontaneous) than the more hard-edged traditional (some say "real") Flamenco styles.

I'm not making an artistic judgement here, I'm just saying this just so you'll know what you'll be looking at / listening to.

Before we go down the line of what is and is not Flamenco maybe you should look at an excellent BBC documentary about the dance style
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/tv/posts/Flamenco-Gypsy-Soul
Unfortunately no longer available on iplayer.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01dy1fk
It was a fascinating program.

<Seville has its own sub-genre of Flamenco (some say it's not even Flamenco) called "Sevillanas".>

Flamenco and sevillanas are to quite different things. Sevillanas is a festive dance and music-style with its own choreograpfy and rhytm. Everybody dance Sevillanas at local fiestas such as Feria de Abril for example. For outsiders it might appear similar to some flamenco-styles, but no-one who knows will mistake it for flamenco.

And Sevilla is a cradle of flamenco culture, you can find the "real deal" all over town. The greatest flamenco artists perform in Sevilla theaters all the time. A bit off season for the major performances, Christmas time is mostly for festive Zambombas or the flamenco inspired villancicos (Christmas songs) often in the streets, such as here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYRkHbpKygI.

BUT a couple of interesting things scheduled for your dates:

On Dec 27 Salomé Pavón sings in homage to her legendary grandfather, Manolo Caracól, one of the greatest in flamenco cante/song history. In Sala Cajasol, C/ Laraña, 4 at 9pm. http://www.guiaflama.com/agenda-mens...-salome-pavon/
Video of Salomé Pavón: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvO-hc5qvQo

On Dec 28, very young and talented Antonio Heredia sings in the local flamenco club Peña Niño de la Alfalfa, in Calle Castellar 52 Acc C at 9.30pm.

If you want to see great flamenco dancers, I recommend to go to either Casa de La Memória or La Casa del Flamenco. Performances every night. Changing artists all the time, but they all perform as soloists at the major festivals. Popular with tourists, but this is the real deal. No food, no drinks, just flamenco for about an hour.

Casa de la Memória: http://www.casadelamemoria.es/

La Casa del Flamenco: http://www.lacasadelflamencosevilla.com/
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractio...Andalucia.html

Clips of a couple of regular dancers at these places:

Pastora Galván, voted best female flamenco dancer 2010 by Spanish critics. She dances at Casa de la Memória two days before you come to town, and maybe on either Jan 1 or 2.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2SBUcrJgeQ

Rising star Alberto Sellés is a regular at La Casa del Flamenco: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gV8hmd2Kox8

Mercedes de Córdoba won the prestigious Premio Nacional de Arte Flamenco in Córdoba one month ago. Dances at Casa de la Memória three days before you arrive and maybe on Jan 1 or 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VE8ejuTNpaM

Great Lucía Alvarez "La Piñona" dances at La Casa del Flamenco on Dec 30th:

And here's a clip of sevillanas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XIOty_3uNE

... If I was in Sevilla these days, I would be sure to book tickets for the Salomé Pavón night on Dec. 27. You can call the Ticket office at +34 901214848 / +34 954484848. Open Monday-Saturday 11-13.30 and 18-21, Sundays 11-13.30.

The Cajasol theater is next door to "the Metropol Parasol, the latest architectural wonder of the city" mentioned by aliced above. http://elclubexpress.com/espacios/sa...tural-cajasol/

The peña's website: http://www.niñodelaalfalfa.es/
These places are always very welcoming to new people.

And late at night, you might end up in Bar El Mantoncillo C/ Alfarería, 104 in the Triana district across the city river Guadalquivir. As genuine as it gets. Here anything can happen:

There are restaurants lining the streets, one after the other seemingly all the same, but there was one that we liked so much that we went twice on an 11 day stay in Seville ---> http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restauran...Andalucia.html

Kimhe and others,

We're here in Seville until Jan 23. How did you find out that incredible list of what's on in Seville for flamenco? We saw flamenco in the Albaycin in Granada, and want to see a "real" show here, if we can!

ProfessorontheGo,

On Tuesday 21, the best reputed and most genuine flamenco club/bar in Sevilla, El Mantoncillo, is celebrated in wonderful and old world Teatro Lope de Vega. The show "El mantoncillo de Triana" starts at 8.30pm and includes some of the finest traditional and old school flamenco artists in town. Buy tickets online or in the theater ticket office, Tickets 10-30€: http://teatrolopedevega.org/

Pretty sure the performance will reflect the informal and 100% genuine flamenco spirit of the bar itself (El Mantoncillo is very much alive in C/ Alfarería, 104 in the Triana district).

Great artists every night in intimate Casa de la Memória in C/Cuna, 6. No drinks, no food, just flamenco. Performances at 7.30 and 9pm. Song, guitar and both male and female dancer. Tickets 16€. http://www.casadelamemoria.es/

I would recommend to see Mercedes de Córdoba on Tuseday 21. She won the prestigious Premio Nacional de Arte Flamenco in Córdoba a couple of months ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VE8ejuTNpaM

But all artists performing here are top of the shelf.

Also excellent artists in La Casa del Flamenco, much the same concept as in Casa de la Memória; song, guitar, male and female dancer. Small and intimate patio in Calle Ximénez de Enciso, 28. Every night at 7.30pm: http://www.lacasadelflamencosevilla.com/

Tonight Saturday 18. you can see Carmen Lozano and Juan Polvillo here. Powerful dancers who have performed on the major stages and in the major festivals:
Carmen Lozano: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVv77QscEQg
Juan Polvillo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5soaw8UrII8

Saw Polvillo in a small venue here in Oslo a couple of years ago, he was brilliant.

Here are some sites to search for flamenco performances: http://www.guiaflama.com/agenda/
