Flamenco in Seville - September

Hi - I am going to be in Seville with my wife on September 21st, 22nd, 23rd - and we are planning to go to a Flamenco show here rather than in Barcelona. However, we are a bit lost on where to go to see the best show. We would like to find one that does not have dinner and is not so touristy but authentic and would be a great time. Can anyone help? Also - how long do the shows usually last (trying to plan the day/night).

Thanks!

I would recommend intimate Casa de la Memória in central Calle Cuna, 6 (only some 80 seats). Popular with tourists, but only great artists perform here. No dinner, no drinks, just flamenco for some 60 minutes (all basic elements of flamenco: song (cante), guitar (toque) and dance (baile)). Changing artists all the time, two performances every night, 7.30 and 9pm.

The program for your dates is not set yet, but here are some of the world class dancers that have performed here more or less weekly for the past years:

Pastora Galván, voted best bailaora 2010 by Spansih critics:

Rafael Campallo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZ_g1q47QgU

And Rafael's sister Adela Campallo, now back where she belongs after a serious car accident some years ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yE43zB0ihe8

Several of the other regulars at Casa de la Memória have performed at the greatest flamenco festivals, also as soloists.

You could also check out what is happening in Peña Torres Macarena, a local flamenco club in the Macarena district of considerable fame. One or two concerts pr. week, and here you will meet a predominantly local and welcoming crowd. http://www.torresmacarena.com/index....ades-flamencas

Before you go, read up on the nuances of Flamenco and related styles.

Sevillanas (a music and dance style particular to Seville) is influenced by Flamenco but somewhat different, more melodic, softer than other styles - it helps to know what it is you're seeing and hearing if you're serious about the art form.

This wiki article does a fair job at characterizing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sevillanas

No sevillanas at Casa de la Memória for sure and hardly at Torres Macarena apart from special celebrations, but there are fun places in the Triana district that opens about midnight and are more in the more joy- and playful sevillanas/rumbas direction.

Casa Anselma in C/ Pagés del Corro, 49 is the most famous. Here's Anselma herself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gw1atBQq_u0

I like El Rejoneo in Calle Betis, 31. Here is Samara Amador, daughter of living dance legend Manuela Carrasco, singing. She at least used to sing here often: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPZT3ADgWsw

Afterwards go for a drink to La Carboneria for a classic Sevilla experience. Often Flamenco artists performing and no cover.

I would not miss the flamenco show at Tablao El Cordobes on the Rambla in Barcelona when you are there. The best artists in Spain perform there on a regular basis, many of them from Sevilla. All the other suggestions about Sevilla are also excellent but if you can, I would definitely do both.

Very much agree with Menendez, but I will also add Tablao de Carmen in Barcelona. 2013 is a very special flamenco year in Barcelona because of the Carmen Amaya centennial (and 50 years since she died).

Lucía Álvarez "La Piñona" (1985, Jimena de la Frontera, Cádiz) is guest artist at Tablao de Carmen from September 3 to 29. Some friends saw her here earlier this year, and they were totally mesmerized. She has won several prestigious prizes:

If you can stay one extra day in Sevilla, you can see the premiere performance of the three week long Muestra de flamenco festival. Here you'll meet a predominantly local and knowledgeable crowd. http://www.flamenco-world.com/notici...092013ing.html

Javier Barón is Premio Nacional de Danza 2008 and opens the festival on Sept 24 in Teatro Central. Could be a great experience: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73bbCu01q18
