Five nights in Extremadura
Hi ya all,
My husband and I plan to travel by bus from Lisbon to Badajoz maybe via Evora in mid May.
From there we will have four more nights for Merida, Caceres .......
Do people suggest keep going North to Salamanca and then across to Sergovia or straight across to Toledo?
We hope to be able to get around by public bus instead of having to hire a car?
We will be ending up in Madrid.
We realise this area is a lot more remote and untouched and that is what seems appealing to us.
Would we be okay just arriving at each town and finding accommodation or would we be better off pre booking?
There doesn't seem to be a lot of info on this region compared to some other parts of Spain.
Many thanks for any advice
Nick

There is a bus from Lisbon to Mardid run by ALSA. It stops off in Badajoz.
http://www.alsa.es
From Badajoz you can get to Mérida once day. http://www.turismobadajoz.es/es/estacion-de-autobus
Have you thought about going from Badajoz onto Madrid again using the ALSA bus route and taking day trips to Sergovia and Toledo? This could mean missing out Salamanca but I cannot find buses between Badajoz and Salamanca. This is alos jsut a bit too far away from Madrid to make it a day trip

Thanks ribeirasacra for your prompt reply.
We really want to see some of the Extremadura area - Merida and Caceres (Trujillo and Bejar also sound interesting but not sure they are worth spending a night in when we only have five nights total in that area?) before heading on to Madrid.
I wonder if its worth stopping one night in Badajoz, two in Merida and two in Caceres before heading to Madrid or swapping Badajoz with one night in Salamanca before continuing on to Madrid?
From my research I think I can get from Caceres to Salamanca by bus but I could have read it all wrong!

Stopping in Badajoz will depend on what time of the year. If it's the middle of the summer, then no, but it's fine the rest of the year (www.aytobadajoz.es).
As always, unless you want to spend some of your valuable time hunting for accommodations for the night, and possibly paying rack rate, it's best to have a reservation. I would highly recommend staying in the Paradors in Cáceres (www.parador.es/es/paradores/parador-de-caceres) and Merida (www.parador.es/es/paradores/parador-de-merida). The Parador de Cáceres was recently renovated and is very comfortable.
In Badajoz, I would look at the Hotel AC Badajoz. It's a member of the Marriott group in Spain.
ALSA provides bus service between Cáceres and Salamanca (www.alsa.es/).

Happy to have found this thread. My son just found out he's been placed in Extremadura to be an "Auxiliar de Conversación" (to help teach English)and I'll make sure I visit him there. I've never been to this area.
Kandn, if by any chance you see this thread again, please come back and tell us how it went!

Hi cruiseluv,
We are in Seville at the moment, won't get to the Extremadura area for another two weeks. It's really hot here in Seville - mid to high 30's and I'd say the Extremadura will be even hotter so I'm not sure that we'll actually go. We're just going to see what it's like closer to the time.
I'll report back though if we do make it there.
Good luck to your son.

Hi all,
In the end we decided to stick to our original plan of spending time in Extremadura and we're so glad we did!
Unfortunately due to spending an extra two nights elsewhere, we only ended up with three nights in total but it all worked out fine.
We caught the bus from Lisbon to Merida arriving early afternoon. Merida is a great town for an overnight stay, especially as we had that whole afternoon, evening and then the following morning to explore.
We loved the Roman history dotted throughout the town, my favourites were the Roman theatre and the aquaducts complete with stork nests on top full of baby storks getting ready to fly the nest.
Storks are everywhere in the Extremadura region, it was thrilling watching them!
It was a very short 45 min or so train ride the next day to Caceres where we stayed for two nights.
This is a medieval town, really lovely but we actually preferred the medieval town of Trujillo which we visited by bus the following morning. Probably because the walled town is set up high on the top of the hill and the fort has fabulous views!
I am glad we did Trujillo as a day trip though, we enjoyed a late lunch there before catching the 3 o'clock ish bus back to Caceres.
The weather was fabulous (probably high 20's) the whole time and it was absolutely wonderful being able to explore without hoards of tourists everywhere.
We didn't find many people anywhere that spoke English but sign language worked fine! We also enjoyed some lovely food that were specialities of Extremadura.
We would definitely recommend spending some time in this region especially at this time of the year whilst the temperatures are mild and the storks are nesting.
