Fiumincino Airport into Rome, how to get there?

We are flying in to Fiumincino, I know it is about 45 min. out of Rome, is there a train or shuttle that you can take in to the city, or is a cab the only means of getting in to Rome? Thanks so much for your help.

Yes, there is a train that takes you to the Central statin in rome.

If rain or taxi makes the most sense depends on 1) how many of yuo there are, 2) how mch luggage you have and 3) how much you mind schlepping the luggage around.

Also, remember that you have to get from the train station to your hotel - via foot, bus or cab.

Train can be less expensive, but more of a hassle. Instead of a cab, if you decide the car is better, go with a shuttle. Rome Shuttle Limousine is an excellent service that a substantial number of us use.

Train cost balances out at 3 people, however that is figuring that you will not take a taxi from Termini to your hotel/apartment. Train loses at 4 people. Shuttle wins in pure convenience and ease and even with 2 people, the value wins.

I don't know where you are flying in from, but after a very long flight from LAX with a long layover in Amsterdam, I informed my sister as we were landing in Rome, that I'd made an executive decision and booked Rome Cabs. Believe me airport to hotel/apartment service is worth it, no matter the cost. I think we paid 40-45 euros. I thought my sister would break into tears of joy when she realized we would not be shlepping our bags onto the train, through the train station and then taking a cab to our hotel from Termini. I cancelled out all good will the next day, when I took her on a forced march through Rome, but the night we arrived, she actually had warm and fuzzy feelings about me.

If you're on a budget, take the Leonardo Express train from airport to Rome Termini. About E15. Goes about every 1/2 hour and never gets stuck in traffic jams.

In another thread you mentioned you are going to Sorrento. Are you heading to Sorrento immediately after landing in Fiumicino? If that is the case and if your party is no more than 2, taking the Leonardo Express will put you conveniently inside the Termini station to continue your trip. If Rome is the destination of the day, unless your hotel is within walking distance from Termini or Tiburtina, you would probably end up taking a taxi anyway with or without train.

Hi Dave,

The shuttle says it's 40E from the airport -- so an advantage really only for a party too large to take a cab? Or are there other advantages, such as the price being set...

BTW do we have the trouble in Italy of drivers not putting on the meters?

Do people ever share cabs, as is done in NYC?

Does it matter if it's a weekday or weekend?

Many thanks!

Rome has a 40 Euro flat rate for Taxis from the airport into the city. The taxis are not allowed to charge any more than that , it is fixed by law!!

Check out the baggage charge on the cabs and additional people charge. Plus with the shuttle the driving is waiting for you with a sign when you exit, with a cab you get to stand in a line.

txroadrunner, which method of transportation you take from FCO depends (as mentioned) by your budget, the number of folks in your group, your desired level of convenience/comfort, and WHERE you are headed.

The methods of travel from FCO include, regional buses, two private bus companies (€4-€8), the FR1 train (€8), the Leonardo Express train (€14), Roma city taxis, Fiumicino city taxis, a shared shuttle service, or a private shuttle service. You can read about all the methods to get into town here: http://tinyurl.com/FCO-depart

The Roma taxis operate under the fixed-rate agreement. If you're headed to or from the "fixed-rate" zone to or from FCO... then your taxi will carry four people and their luggage for €40. If your hotel is OUTSIDE the zone, then you will be 'on the meter.' From FCO, the meter should be set at Tariff 2 until the taxi gets to the GRA (ring road), then the driver will QUICKLY change it to Tariff 1 (which is a higher rate). For info and a couple maps on the fixed rate zone, see: http://tinyurl.com/Rome-fixed-rate

Don't get into a Fiumicino city taxi (look on the side of the taxi for a Roma symbol). The Fiumicino taxis charge €60 to go into the city.

If you're headed to the Roma Trastevere or Roma Ostiense areas, then the FR1 Metropolitan is your best bet - and only €8 per person. For photos and route information, see http://tinyurl.com/FR1-FCO

If you're going to Roma Termini, and with only 2 folks, the Leonardo Express may be the fastest or easiest method. It's €14 a person. So for 3 people in a group a taxi is actually cheaper. The Leonardo Express is running "new" trains - see http://tinyurl.com/FCO-LE

You can buy each of these train tickets at the FCO train station but do make sure you validate your tickets before getting on a train! The fines are far more than the ticket price.

Or if you're headed to Roma Termini, you can jump on the Terravision or SITBus Shuttle buses. These take about an hour (depending on traffic) and will eventually drop you off on the side of the Roma Termini train station. These posts have info on these two bus options: http://tinyurl.com/terravision and http://tinyurl.com/SITBus

For many people, especially as mentioned after a long flight, a private shuttle is the way to go. These - and the taxis - will drop you at your accommodations. Everything other mode, you'll have to "make your way to" the accommodations - which may include a taxi ride - depending on where you're staying.

Or if you come into Roma Termini, you can connect to the metro or one of the many buses out front of the train station. Roma Trastevere and Roma Ostiense also have bus or tram connections. Roma Ostiense is on the B Line Metro - only 2 stops from the Colosseo.

There are many, many options - good luck in your choice!
