First trip to Ireland, suggestions wanted please

My friend and I are taking our first (probably only) trip to Ireland in October. Currently thinking about 21st-29th ?? I've been reading lots of books, looking at lots of posts and checked some air fare, B&B and car rental places but can't make a logical plan based on what we want to see. Thought first of flying into Shannon, and the west looks beautiful but the main tourist spots we're hoping to see are: Blarney Castle, ROK, Newgrange, and heard great things about Clifden. Unfortunately I see that these areas are all opposite ends. Without spending our whole time traveling and in the car, is there anyway to make these areas work? Happy to fly into/out of Dublin or into one airport, out of another, etc. We plan on renting a car and would like to stay at B&B's close to towns so we can walk to pubs in the evening. Any and All suggestions are greatly appreciated!!
