Trip Report First Trip to Europe, Alone in Italy

Ok - long story short - I am a 28 year old female teacher who has been living at home to help my parents out while they were out of work. I made a promise to myself that if my father got a job before summer, I was going to Italy. Clearly, since I am writing this, he got the job - in June, but I had plans until August, so I went for the first two weeks of August. Since no one could afford the trip on such short notice, I went solo (which was only slightly scary for a very sheltered girl from small town New England!)

I flew into Venice and spent one night, then took a train to Brescia (where I stayed with family for 3 nights). After Brescia I made my way to Positano for 4 nights and Rome for 5 (with a pit stop in Pompeii) before flying home.

I planned the entire trip online with the advice of fodorites and trip advisor, and I was talked into staying the night in Venice by my family - I had no intention of staying and booked that hotel the night before!

Because I was going in August, I pre-planned at least one activity a day, and bought tickets to all must-sees ahead of time. I also planned several day tours - since I was alone and don't have the best sense of direction, I did not want to waste all of my time lost and confused!

I completely fell in love with Italy - it is my dream to see the world and this could not have been more of a perfect start. All of my concerns about traveling alone were completely unfounded and I would do it again in a heartbeat (although this coming summer I will have a companion.)
