My 21 year-old daughter will be studying in Luxembourg for 6 weeks this summer, and I will join her at the end of June to travel for 2 weeks. While my daughter is in Lux, she will be taking weekend trips to all of the areas around Lux, such as Paris, Amsterdam, etc., therefore, I do not want to repeat visits to those areas. (I am considering going over a week before I am to meet her just to see Paris/London.)
I have never been to Europe before and am feeling overwhelmed by the choices of where to go. I don't want to use a tour company as I want a more quaint, customized vacation. I'm just not sure where to begin.
We would like a mixture of seeing historical buildings/sites, eating and staying at quaint places, seeing countryside, a bit of nightlife, and maybe a day or two at a beach.
Does anyone have suggestions as to an good intinerary for this? I will be meeting her in Lux and then we can fly or take a train from there.
Thank you very much!

hi, mrt - this is the portion of the trip WITH your daughter, right?
where does she want to go?
my suggestion would be to train/fly to the south of France - which will give you history in Provence and beach/seaside in Nice, then get the train to florence - for italian history, then the train to, say, lake maggiore for some relaxation, and finally the train to venice for....venice. she can then fly back to Luxembourg, and you can fly home.
Since you aren't sure where you'd want to go, this is one time I'd suggest getting some guidebooks from the library. Ones that cover all of Europe. Look at maps and photos to see what interests you.
It will not be hard to plan the trip you're proposing, the hardest part is deciding where it is you want to go! Once you've got some ideas about that, we'll be able to better help you get organized.
