First time traveling to Europe... Destination: Italy

I will be traveling with a group of 7 globetrotters and have been put in charge of finding accommodations in Rome - however, taking into account that the only country outside of the US that I have been would be Mexico, this task is turning out to be quite daunting.

Any suggestions for an affordable but memorable place to stay while in Rome for 4 days? I think that everyone is already assuming that as the rookie, I'll go for the commercialized hotels, but I want to wow them!

I'm not sure what you mean by commercialized hotels. Are you wanting to find an apartment, upscale hotel? Do you need 7 rooms? What's your budget?

kcl-- finding accomodations in Rome is daunting for EXPERIENCED globetrotters, let alone a first-timer with a large group in tow! You are a toughie for taking on this challenge!

Couple of critical details: WHEN are you going? HOW much is your budget? Any special needs in the group?

Sorry..I meant apartment since our group is so big and getting that many hotel rooms will be expensive. More than happy to squish in between 3-4 rooms. Per person... 40-90usd per night

You need to do a search on this forum for Rome apartments. And a google search on the same subject. I suspect given your price limitations, that what you find will be memorable but the memories won't be good ones.

Per person 40-90usd per night? That's a *VERY* big price spread.

So you are looking for an apartment in Rome that sleeps 7 people for between 198euro - 444euro per night.

7 people in 2 rooms means a quad and a triple. It will be cramped quarters. Most Europe hotel rooms aren't like the typical American rooms with 2 queen beds. Also, quads in particular, are harder to find, and the typical hotel may only have 1 or 2 such rooms. Probably 3 rooms (2 doubles/twins and a triple) would make more sense. An apartment is a good idea.

When are you going? Prices vary considerably based on season. The low end of your budget would be tough in any case.

Thanks for the suggestions! Will let everyone know how the place pans out

You might want to post the address of the apartment here so that people with Rome experience can advise you. That price sounds a little questonable to me.

A 4-bedroom apartment for 197euro per night. That is "impressive".

Check out homestay.com and vrbo.com looking for apartments that are next to each other -- I was looking for an apartment recently, but for just two people, ended up with a good deal at a hotel in a good location. I do remember seeing some interesting apartments, though, that could be "combined" or would easily work for 3 in one and 4 in another.
