First time traveling, have questions about my route.

Hey guys I'm planning a trip to visit a few places, and was wondering about my somewhat itinerary. I really like history, architecture, nightlife, and nature. Im 23 and from the USA. Is this too much to do in about a month? Should I skip, add, or change anything? I wanted to visit somewhere in Slovakia between Krakow and Budapest but thought it may be rushed. Also wondering about a slight budget estimate. I plan on staying in hostels, eating very cheap, and doing anything free. Alcohol may be my biggest expense. I was planning on about 2330 euro to 2800 (2500 - 3000 usd) (excluding airfare) Any and all information, or advice is appreciated!

Day 1 land in Berlin
Day 2 Berlin
Day 3 Berlin
Day 4 Berlin
Day 5 Berlin
Day 6 Berlin to Dresden
Day 7 Dresden
Day 8 Dresden to Worclaw
Day 9 Worclaw
Day 10 Worclaw
Day 11 Worclaw
Day 12 Worclaw to Krakow
Day 13 Krakow
Day 14 Krakow
Day 15 Krakow
Day 16 Krakow to Budapest
Day 17 Budapest
Day 18 Budapest
Day 19 Budapest
Day 20 Budapest
Day 21 Budapest to Vienna
Day 22 Vienna
Day 23 Vienna
Day 24 Vienna to Cesky Krumlov
Day 25 Cesky Krumlov
Day 26 Cesky Krumlov to Prague
Day 27 Prague
Day 28 Prague
Day 29 Prague
Day 30 flight out of prague

Congratulations on a well-thought-out 1st trip! And welcome to Fodors!

Much as I loved Budapest, you might consider shifting at least 1 day to Vienna. You might even try to find another day to shift to Vienna - but I'm guessing that you've done your homework well enough to have made your estimates based on your interests.

I'm sorry, but I can't help you with your budget estimates, except to say that I fear (I hope without foundation!) that you might be underestimating your costs. I trust that more knowledgeable Fodorites will weigh in....

The direct trains Dresden to Wroclaw (spelling!) have been cancelled some weeks ago. Now you have to take a train to Görlitz, from there bus #P to Zgorzelec train station, from there another train to Wroclaw. Inconvenient, but doable.

Btw, 3 full days in Wroclaw seem to long for me, compared to e.g. 1 full day in Dresden. Either shift this day to Dresden or plan an overnight in Görlitz.

Agree with kja, deduct one day from Budapest and add it to Vienna.

In Prague my boys stayed in Hostel Prague Tyn, which we had seen prior when we were there. Excellent location and they said it was good
Beer is cheap in Prague and Krakow.
We took the overnight train from Krakow to Budapest which saved money
You will have a great time I am sure.

Good shot !
I think 3 days in Krakow is overkill - the city needs one day, and one day to Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Put another day to Berlin - never too many days in Berlin...
As for the costs, well Berlin, Krakow and the likes are cheap compared to France.
I could get 4 stars hotels in Krakow and PRague for about 100-120 €/night - so a hostel should be below 30 e/night...
Eating on a low budget is relatively easy - wehn young I used to go to supermarkets, buy stuff, then some bread and eat outside on a bank. A few Euros can then suffice per meal.
Enjoy, I'm jealous...

If doing that by rail be sure to check out the European East Railpass that lets you hop on anytime virtually every train in Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Austria - covers all your trains save Berlin to Prague and that you can get discounted tickets for as low as 29 euros from www.bahn.de/en - German railways site.

For lots of great info on European trains and passes check thse IMo superb sites: www.ricksteves.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.seat61.com.

and yes hat's off to a wonderful itinerary - only thing I don't see is why so long in Worclaw? I'd suggest spending a few days too in Warsaw - lots of interesting things there too.

Too many days in Wroclaw. Add 2 of those days to Dresden and do a day trip to Leipzig

Just south of Dresden a day or two could be lovely in Saxon Switzerland, one of the most beautiful river valleys in Europe IME - though you see it from the train to Prague that slices right thru it it's better to do at least a day trip by boat or train from Dresden and trek up to such famous fortresses as the Bastei

Wroclaw, not Worclaw. The Poles pronounce it Vrotswav (comes from a Polish ex-pat we met in Belize - seems Belizean winters are far better than Polish ones).

If you have $3000 and stay on the cheap, you're going to blow about $1000 on lodging, probably a little more. So that makes at most $2k left. Start pricing trains and (ugh) buses.
