First Europe Trip - Rome, _______?, Paris

We're traveling from Atlanta to Rome and back to Atlanta from Paris. We want to go somewhere in between - either South of France or Amalfi Coast.

Question 1 - which one and what is the best way to travel there from Rome?
Question 2 - how many days should we spend in each? Here is what I was thinking:
Wed, May 26: Leave Atlanta in the PM
Thurs, May 27: Arrive in Rome in the AM
Fri, May 28: Rome
Sat, May 29: Rome
Sun, May 30: Travel to Amalfi Coast or South of France
Mon, May 31:
Tues, June 1:Travel to Paris
Wed, June 2: Paris
Thurs, June 3: Paris
Fri, June 4: Leave for Atlanta in the AM

With so little time I would stick to Rome and Paris - you will barely begin to scratch the surface in the time you have.

I agree; spend your whole time in Rome & Paris. You only have 7 full days plus 2 half days (arrival & departure days). I'd spend May 27-30 in Rome; May 31 travel day to Paris, June 1-4 to Paris.

You only have a week - I wouldn't visit more than one major city in that time so 2 cities is plenty.

If you need to add another location then choose the French Riviera since it's on your way. The Amalfi Coast is several hours in the wrong direction.

For this trip, I'd add a day each to Rome and Paris. If you get itchy, you can day trip from Rome to Orvieto or Pompeii and from Paris to Versailles or Chartres. Others will suggest other day trips.

However, if you still wish to go to that third place, I'd say South of France if you want a lot going on (casinos, night life, etc.) and Amalfi if you want more laid back and gorgeous coast. If you aren't planning to fly to that middle place, I'd say you'd lose valuable tourist time with the travel.

Here's another vote to dividing the time between Rome & Paris with no third destination. As noted, you'll barely scratch the surface as it is.
