Finding best air prices to Italy

Because I'm a teacher, I'm limited to traveling during Christmas break, Easter or summer. Where are the best sources for finding the best prices for air to Italy during these time?
I live in VA, so I can leave from DC, BWI or NYC easily enough.

Not sure how long your breaks are.

Go to www.itasoftware.com Click on "looking for airfares". Then click on "Month-long search". Type in WAS for your "from" - this will include all DC airports. You can try different Italian cities to check out prices to them. Stick wih the larger Italian airports and plan on continuing by train if you are going to a smaller city. Enter the first date of your break and it will show the lowest fares for the nest 30 days. Then click on that date to see all flights.

ITA is just an informational site. Once you have found something, you'll need to contact the airline or a travel agent to buy the ticket.

The BEST air price would be to leave on 12/31, round trip to/from Rome and stay about a week: $472 (includes all taxes/fees).

Easter break is a few hundred dollars more.

Summer break is at least double.

Usually, you only save about $100 by flying out of NYC. Not worth the 4.5 hour drive each way, IMO.

I happened to hear a very interesting guy interviewed on the radio yesterday, he's an expert on finding low airfare and has his own website - http://airfarewatchdog.com/

He said the most "muscular" search engine for flights on the internet is travelocity's "flexible dates" option - that it consistently yields better results than any other site. Worth a try, anyway.

It's likely the best prices will not be direct to Italy, but rather via a large volume point of entry, like London or Frankfurt (easy on UA/Lufthansa from Dulles.) Then a connecting flight on a low-cost carrier to your Italian destination will be cheapest. Or, use the under-appreciated "airpass" approach - see the Star Alliance, Oneworld Alliance, or Skyteam Alliance websites and look for "air passes" or "visit Europe" programs, various names, that allow you to buy intra-Europe tickets more cheaply than their cost in Europe. The advantage these programs have is that you use the big-time carriers, from their hub airports, rather than having to toodle around to the Stansteds and Bratislavas of the world to get to the LCCs.

Also on ITA, use the "distance" filters - as Bardo1 says, use the "WAS" distinction for the origin, but then try the "or within X00 miles" option in regard to your destination, e.g., WAS-FCO or any airport w/in 300 miles.
