Ferry schedule along the SW Coast of Crete. Chora Sfakia to Paleochora

Hello Fodorites!

A couple of years ago we took the ferry along the SW Coast of Crete from Chora Sfakia to Paleochora. We will be traveling in mid October and try as I might I can't find a direct ferry route. Does anyone have an idea if the ferry still goes from CS to Paleochora?

Many Thanks!

Lisa

Hi Sheila!

That would be a problem since we will have a car and the service seems to only go on Monday and Wednesday. I wonder if there is any other way?

Thanks so much!

Lisa,

I think that you are looking at the ferries that go to Gavdos. In October you can take the 1300 ferry from Sfakia to Agia Roumeli have a couple of hours there and then go on to Sougia at 1600. Your car would stay on the ferry in Agia Roumeli. These ferries run every day.

You will have to get off at Sougia as only the small passenger boat goes on to Paleochora this year. The other big boat is under repair. You could either stay in Sougia for the night or drive on to Paleochora. Early to mid-October is a really nice time to be in either Sougia or Paleochora as the water is still warm for swimming and it's not too hot if you're into walking.

Dear Fodorites,
The Anendyk Maritime Ferry just issued an update to their schedule and it looks like it is again possible to take the car ferry from Hora Sfakion to Agia Roumeli and then take the other ferry to Paleochora. I guess that the big ferry must have been fixed?!
Thanks for all of your help and please let me know if I'm reading the ferry schedule incorrectly!

Lisa,

You are right. The second big ferry is back in service. You should have no trouble getting from Hora Sfakion to Paleochora with your car. You will still have a short lay over in Agia Roumeli.

Anyone planning on using the ferries on the south coast of Crete in the near future should check the link listed above in Sheila's message.

It seems that hundreds of Samaria Gorge walkers were stranded in Agia Roumeli last week. There are ferries now running but the schedule could change daily.

Lisa, at the moment the car ferry doesn't go to Paleohora. But things could change before next month.

Cwra,
Are the ferries now on strike or is it due to weather conditions? This isn't very good news but I really appreciate your post! Please let me know if you have any more info.

Lisa,

I just back back from 8 days in Crete yesterday. The problem with the ferries isn't related to any strikes but with the safety certification from a Russian company.

It's a long story and I didn't get all the details. But while I was there there were no car ferries going anywhere between Sfakia and Paleohora. The passenger ferries ran everyday except for Sunday (the day I left) when the Paleohora to Sfakia ferry never showed up in Paleohora.

Luckily for me I was taking the bus to Hania which was fine. My flight from Hania to Athens in afternoon was another matter. Because of air traffic control problems the flight was cancelled. Aegean Airlines was great and scheduled a new flight that left at 1AM and got me into Athens in time to get flight home on Monday.

There were hundreds of people stranded at the airport but everyone seemed to make the best of it. There's a nice simple restaurant just a few minutes walk from the airport where we mostly ate, drank and played cards until it was time to catch the late night flight.
