Ferry from Scotland to Norway

Has anyone ever taken a ferry from Scotland to Norway? We're especially interested in how long it takes and approximately how much it costs. Is it worth the trip, or would it make more sense just to fly to Norway (from Scotland)? Thanks.

I mat be wrong, but I don't think you can. You can get a ferry from Newcastle, but that,of course, is in England

Hi, Lily.
Yes, there's a ferry from Newcastle to Stavanger/Haugesund/Bergen. Leaves Neewcastle 2-3 times a week, app travel time up to 24 hours. Take cars.
Operated by Fjord line, www.fjordline.no

When trying to reach the English pages, I got "timeout", but the Norwegian pages worked ok regarding prices, timetables etc. Anyway you'll find addresses and tel numbers.

To me prices seemed high. I would not be surprised if you can have a better deal by flight, and of cause also a considerable time saving.

Bjorn, Oslo

Lily

there are no direct ferries between Scotland and Norway. The closest port with links to Norway is in Newcastle, just over the border in northern England. Another company which sails from Newcastle to Kristiansand in Norway is DFDS Seaways. You might want to check their website at www.dfdsseaways.co.uk. Or you could fly to Norway from the major Scottish airports, it might be a lot easier.

Thanks so much for your responses. Flying probably does make more sense, but we just thought it sounded like a very scenic way to get there. Thanks again.

Hi again
If you insist on going from Scotland, you can combine P&O Scottish Ferries, which traffic Aberdeen-Lerwick, with Smyril line, which will take you to Bergen. I don't know how they correspond, but you can chek it up on these addresses:
http://www.poscottishferries.co.uk
http://www.smyril-line.com

Bjorn

As somebody said earlier, there are about 3 sailings per week from Newcastle, to Bergen, some via Stavanger.
If you can time your trip so that you are sailing between Stavanger and Bergen in daylight, the scenery is well worth the trip
I did this in reverse leaving Bergen at 11 am, and the trip was quite memorable. Admittedly the weather was super, so much so that the ferry company served a BBQ lunch on deck, as we ran down the coast. The ferry is'nt cheap, but it is quite good.
However if your timings mean that you sail straight into Bergen, missing Stavanger, or do this part in darkenss, then I think a flight might be the better option.
