We'll be visiting Amalfi from Positano and I had wanted to return to Positano by ferry to view the coastline from the water. Will traveling by ferry get us close enough to the shoreline to appreciate the view? Would a coastal tour be better?
We'll be there the last week in April and I was planning on returning to Positano during daylight because of seeing the coast - on the other hand I'd also like to have dinner in Amalfi - how would a later return be after sunset?
Ferry from Amalfi to Positano, views compaired to tour-day or evening?

Oh, the view from the boat is fabulous. Incredible. Fantastic and much better than from the road. I can't stress how much I prefer the boat to the road.
The only thing I would wonder about is how late the ferry runs in late April. I'm not sure they run at all after dark, at any time.
Why not just go to Amalfi by boat, and if you have dinner, return by late bus or taxi?
Dinner probably wont be served at most places until at least 7, and at that point, in will be too late for a ferry home.
One more time: the views from the water are terrific. And the road makes me puke.
The boats don't start running late April. I have not been able to find the exact date.
Even if the boat runs, it does not run late.
Here is the boat site showing the "summer" schedule.

Here is the bus schedule:

The Metro del Mare is a subsidised service intended to relieve road congestion, so only runs in the peak season.
The various private boat operators should have started running in April, but schedules will depend on weather and circumstances. This is one of the operators with some pictures and summer schedules:
