If you're a foodie your definitely out of luck on Malta. Eat seafood for the best meals.
You can shop anywhere but I liked the craft village as there was a variety of handicrafts for sale in a small area. There's a good market in Marsaxlokk on Sundays and there's a craft village in Valletta.

Why did you choose Malta if you don't know anything about it? Have you checked posts and trip reports on Malta on this site? There's plenty of info here. I would also suggest reading a guidebook before you leave.
correction:
you're out of luck
I went to Malta alone for 9 days, and I am a single female. Malta seems to inspire strong feelings among travelers--people tend to really like it a lot, or not at all. I liked it, but can see why others don't.
I suggest you check out Gozo, even if only for the day. If you like shopping, check out the open air markets as adrienne above, suggested. I liked the Sunday one outside the gates of Valletta for the liveliness. It gets very crowded, though, so get there early.
You may also want to consider a day trip to Sicily, which includes a trip to Mt. Etna. I didn't take it because it seemed too rushed. If I had it to do over again, I would build in 2 or 3 days in Sicily instead of spending all 9 days in Malta.
Where are you staying? Most of Malta is dead at night. I recommend St. Julian's, which has more things going on.
If you type Malta in the searchbox above, you will find lots of info and threads on Malta. Also check out:
