Feedback on my '08 Italy plans
I would appreciate any feedback on my current 2008 Italy trip plans.
Arrive in Venice mid afternoon 9/20, spend 3 nights in Vencie. The morning of 9/23 take the train to Florence where we will spend 2 nights at the Hotel Duomo. The morning of 9/25 pick up rental car and spend the next 7 nights in a lovely apartment near Panzano. Drive around to see many of the sites in the Tuscany area (including Pisa, Lucca, Cinque Terre, Siena, etc.) before dropping the car in Siena on the morning of 10/2 and taking the train to Rome. Spend 3 nights in Rome at the Capo d'Africa Hotel and catching a plane home to the states mid-morning on 10/5.
Have I allowed enough time in each of the 3 major cities? I tried to find hotels that were located within walking distance of major attractions, did I make good choices? Is anyone familiar with the Panzano area in Tuscany? Is driving around Tuscany relatively easy? Thanks!

Hi golden,
I think your plan sounds just fine for a first trip with a nice balance of cities and countryside (that's what I like). Enough time for the major cities? You can never have enough time! Everyone has their favorite, mine is Roma!
The only thing to note is the Cinque Terre is not in Tuscany, but Liguria, and is further north than the rest of your trip. I would skip it this time around and spend your apartment stay seeing northern Tuscany and Chianti area.
If you hadn't already booked your apartment, I would suggest splitting your week between northern and southern Tuscany. The good part about stayin in the countryside for a week is you can sightsee as much as you want and relax as much as you want. Then you'll be ready for high energy Rome!
Buon viaggio!

Hi
My wife and I went to Tuscany last summer and we drover around in the area and it was easy and it was beautiful. Check out my trip report with pictures here http://gardkarlsen.com/tuscany_italy_travelogue.htm . We did have a short stop in Panzano and we also made a stop in Greve not too far from Panzano. I had great fun looking around in the butcher store in Greve
Regards

Train from Siena to Rome entails taking a taxi or bus to the station (A steep climb down from the city centre - about a mile). Then a change at Chiusi or Grosseto.
The bus from the town centre to Rome Tiburtina is just as fast, and a lot cheaper particularly if booked online.

While I would add more time in Rome, your plan looks good.
Leave your car in Chuisi or Orvieto.
I'd skip CT (and Pisa)and spend a day in the Val D'Orcia area.
I've stayed in Panzano and it's a good location and easy driving to most locations.
