favorite towns in Piedmont?

We have 3-4 days to drive from Lago Maggiore to the west coast near San Remo and are looking for places to stop. We like charming towns, old town centers, art and history. Looking to splurge on nice lodgings for 2 nites. Not foodies.

I have been reading about Albi, Asti, Turin.

What are you favorite towns?
we need help in figuring out where to stay.
