Favorite places to go for ice cream in Paris?

I've decided that my plan for this summer will be to try as many new and different types of ice cream as possible.

I'll be in Paris this summer for a week. Where should a go for a scoop or two of ice cream? Or gelato? What flavors should I try? I'm not picky, I'll try almost anything once

Are there any Paris ice cream rules I should know about? Are the French a cone-loving people, or do they prefer bowls?

they prefer not bowls IME but 'boules' - balls - you order a cone with "une (e?) boule, deux boules or trois boules - for ordinary ice cream any sidewalk cafe often will have a window selling ice cream cones or the boules in a bowl.

I do not think the French think of ice cream as a delicacy so searching for gourmet or 'the best' ice in Paris may be a Quixotic quest.

Now Disney Europe is not on most tourists radar but these pictures will give you an idea of the types of glace in Paris and France.

Ice cream will by default be given to you in a cone but if you want it in a cup/bowl just say "en pot" (the t is silent in pot). You'll see the different sized cups sitting on the counter. Google "best paris ice cream" and you'll see what the local bloggers have to say about ice cream in Paris:

Do not miss Amorino.many places all over Paris, also Madrid, Barcelona, Lisboa, and many other cities I suppose.

Best Ice cream outside Italy.

In Paris, for sure there is their main location , Îk
Le de Sanin Louis, and one another just of rue Lepic, not far from the Cafe Amelie made famous.

Enjoy Paris and ice cream!

The salted butter caramel at Berthillon is to die for. The blood orange sorbet is also wonderful.

Thanks for all the responses! I do prefer a cone, personally, so that works for me.

Hands down, Amorino is our favorite---every cone in the shape of a flower. My favorite is pistachio, coconut, & vanilla in one cone.

Many locations in Paris, we usually go to the one on St. Louis en Ile.

TPAY your combo is hitting all my hot points. I do plan to hit Amorino the next time we are in Paris.

Another vote for Amorino! I found that the fruit flavors were so much better than anything you can get here in the US. Also, you can't go wrong with chocolate or coffee flavors in my opinion.

Grom, an Italian chain with a great salted caramel flavor. There's one on rue de Seine. Better than Amorino and less crowded.

If you are in Montmartre, there's a great ice cream store on Rue Norvins (goes down the hill from Place du Tertre).

Berthillon in the Ile de la Cite area. OMG so good.
The main place only takes cash for take away. Bring it!

Probably not what you are looking for but to Parisians I know they rave about the Baskins-Robbins in Paris - on the swank Champs-Elysees!

Love Amorino!!

...though Berthillon may have more interesting flavors...but I'm not aware of any locations other than Ile St-Louis. Amorino has lots of locations.

Grom is really great, too...I didn't know they had one in Paris.)

PalenQ....

Baskin-Robbins...really? That's sad.

B-R used to be great when it was a family-owned operation back in the 60's. They sold the firm in the late 60s, I think to United Fruit or some other huge entity. Now it seems to me to be just another large chain of unremarkable American ice cream.

(John Robbins--son and nephew of the two owners--was a good friend of mine in college at Berkeley in those days. I ate a lot of B-R.)

Oh well..each to his own.

Amorino - I liked the one on Ile Saint-Louis. I enjoyed mine sitting by the Seine. Some kids were smoking grass and the cops came and arrested them. That's something you don't see every day...
