We have travelled extensively throughout Western and Eastern Europe but have missed Greece. We will be planning a trip for Sept 2010 and are looking for quiet, away from tourists, undeveloped areas. We enjoy hiking, biking, beautiful beaches. Any suggestions?

Hi,
My favorite island is Symi, but I am not sure if it fills your criteria. Crete really does fit what you are looking for, especially the southern part. The southern part of the Peloponesse is also interesting and has the hiking and beaches. There is a great web site by Matt Barrett. Read what he has to say and he will answer your questions. Have a fabulous time. It is a wonderful and relaxing country.
Yipper
I am a huge Crete fan and I think it would fit your bill. It does, of course, have built up and touristy areas, but the south east, in particular, is very quiet. Great walking, including a European long distance route, masses of off road cycling, great beaches, a diverse culture and nice food. What more could a body ask for?
Crete without a doubt - one thing that many miss is that many of the islands are not blessed with beautiful beaches - of the rest if they have got them they tend to be over-run with screaming British kids.
My favourite by a long way Kefalonia but your best bet is definitely Crete for your term of ref.
