Favorite - Rome or Paris and why?

I just returned two days ago from a two week trip to Italy solo. I went to Rome, Venice and Florence. Loved Rome. I've been to Paris in 1998 and loved that. I was not on a tour but went with a large group of people. That was a very fun vacation, but I get a better perspective of a place traveling solo. What is your opinion - Rome or Paris?

It's an impossible question. Boston or San Francisco? New Orleans or Washington DC? Pasta primavera or crepes? Monet or Da Vinci? Champagne or Barolo?
Paris was my favorite of the two. I speak some French so I felt more at home there. The pace also seemed a little less hectic.

Tom, San Francisco, New Orleans, Pasta Primavera, Da Vinci and Barolo. It's not an impossible question. I'm just asking for personal opinions, thank you.

Rome for me because I just love Italian men - married one (second generation American). I loved Paris too but given the choice I'd always choose Rome.

Well concering your first question I liked Rome by far. It just felt more lively and there was more variety ofthings to do. Also, I felt the italians were more helpful. As for your 2nd question it's San Francisco, Washington DC, Pasta primavera and Da Vinci.

Rome is my choice because Italian people are so warm and friendly. The city is alive with shops and markets. In Paris I got the cold shoulder and dog doo doo on my new shoes. Although in the South of France everyone was nice.

it is an impossible question to answer for anybody other than oneself..... or put in another way, I would hate to be the kind of person who can't answer that question by myself. If you prefer to travel solo, and already did Rome solo, what do you need to know? Paris is your obviuos choice.

Katie, I often hesitate to post in this forum because although most people are very polite and helpful, there always seems to be someone with a rude response. I guess you can be grateful that heaven forbid you're not me "because you would hate to be the kind of person who couldn't answer that question by myself." I'm just asking for personal opinions on a general discussion. Have a nice day.

Read the post I just topped by Jerome. The most eloquent post I have read on Fodors.

Paris for sure! I love Italy, (especially Venice) but not Rome--too much traffic and too dirty. For me the art, architecture, food, and ambience in Paris are magical. Paris has never disappointed me.

I feel about Paris and Rome, like I feel about Tuscany/Umbria and Provence - please do not ask me to choose between them! Love them all! They are so different and so alike!

Kindest regards.

Helen Malan

I thought that Paris was my favorite city before I re-visited Rome last year. It's difficult to choose one city over the other because they both have so much to offer and they are both different from the other. I cannot choose between the two; in fact, they're both equal for me.

Thank you for your kind responses. I guess I would have to agree with you, Andrea. They are probably both equal for me too. Can't go wrong with either one!
