Fashion Police--no white shoes after Labour Day EXCEPT......

Normally here "at home" we wouldn't wear white shoes, capris, sandals,
linen pants, pastel colours, etc. pretty much after Labour Day. We will be in Barcelona late Sept. and Andalucia in early October.
Are all of the above both suitable and practical for that time of the
year in those places?

I guess part of my dilemna is "will it be warm enough in Barcelona the end of September to wear sandals/capris. Since we're going to Andalucia afterwards and it should be significantly warmer, I don't want to pack closed in shoes for just 3-4 days that I'm in Barcelona.

To me, open shoes + city walking = dirty feet. I tried wearing Clarkes sandals in New Orleans, and switched to tennies/socks after a day. But that's just me.

The "no white" after US Labor Day rule is passe. Only old women still live by it.

I'm never comfortable wearing either sandals or heels in europe unless I know I'm going to be solely at a resort or in a modern center city. there are just way too many places with cobblestones, uneven streets and rough stone stairways to use anything except some form of comfy walking shoes. Otherwise I always seem to end up with stubbed toes and/or turned ankles

Spanish people don't know what a "Labour Day" is, so they cannot follow the Labour Day dressing codes.

You are allowed to wear white stilettos in Essex but nowhere else in Europe.

Wear whatever you're comofortable in. I've been twice in Barcelona end of september. Usually the weather is quite nice, though it's quite probable there will be some showers. I would pack a pair of closed shoes anyway, be it only for the comfort while travelling (so you don't put them in your luggage anyway). As for white and what to wear: whatever you're comfortable in. Who cares anyway. But yes, feet do get dirty in sandals in cities. I wear my white Puma's all year long.
Be aware that 23rd-26th of September there's big festivities in Barcelona. Might be exactly what you want or what you want to avoid. If you have a hotel in the center, it will be very noisy all night long! Get one rather at Passeig de Gracia and on a high floor.

Stardust..we're staying at Hotel Amadeus..if you know where that is, do you know if we will be in the midst of the "festivities"?
Re. closed toed shoes..what kind would you suggest when you're walking in the white towns in very warm weather? I have really nice capris and linen pants and can't imagine wearing tennis shoes with them??

Do you have more info on this hotel Amadeus, cause I can't immediately find it back. Like a street, website, etc.?
Wear sandals if you want to! But yes... they might get dusty, so perhaps also bring some shoe cleanser in one of these handy tubes.

I'm not talking about dirty shoes, I mean dirty feet! This will highly increase chance of blisters if a layer of dirt gets on your skin where any of the shoe also lies.

Is something like an 'espadrille' still acceptable as a casual shoe? Might that look ok with capris?

Now that I think of it... I have quite a nice solution... the shoes which are THE fashion hit in Barcelona this summer are the ballerina style flats. Comfy for walking, closed toe and heel, yet elegant enough to wear with capris and linen trousers or a skirt or dress! If you can't find any where you live, by them as soon as you arrive (they're in the winter collections as well, I bought mine last winter at Zara and am still running around in them).

I am in the very DEEP South, and at 44 years of age, I still follow the ENTIRE rule - no white shoes before Easter and after Labor Day. Or perhaps I should say I expect others to follow this rule because like another poster above, I do not own a pair of white shoes, thinking that they should be outlawed except as part of a nurse's uniform.

As for canuck's dilemma, I just returned from 6 weeks in France, and the little ballet flats were the rage there as well. They look good with lots of styles - just please don't buy them in white - LOL!

I'm a fellow canuck and 'at home' here
on the West Coast we start with the
clothes you mentioned in May and wear
them, white or not, until the end of
September. So, I'm a-thinkin' you
must be from Toronto the Good!
