It seems that not too many people like the Algarve region. I want to go there anyway, just to see. Anyone with info on reasonably priced accomodation in and around Faro. I see a lot of reference to a B&B called Amare, how far from Faro? Should we rent a car just for a weeks vacation? Any info on restaurants would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Maurice.

Maurice, Unfortunately, I can't comment on Faro, but I just got back from the Algarve and loved it! We have been living in Scotland and really needed the see the sun and feel the warmth. The Algarve reminds me of Arizona in many ways and I've been wondering if I would have liked it as much if we had come from there instead of Scotland. We stayed in Albufeira and spent lots of time in Vilamoura. The purpose of our vacation was to rest and relax and besides golfing, swimming, tennis and shopping, there's not a whole lot to do. Staying within a resort gave us the chance to do those things. We did rent a car and used it often to go out to dinner. (Food in Portugal is terrific and fairly inexpensive.) We tried to trek out and about but found that it was difficult to find our way around. There were very few road signs, names or route numbers on the roads. Maps don't help much without those! If you have a phone number, call the B&B and ask them your questions. We found the Portuguese to be very friendly and very good at conversing in English. Also, don't go now, it is very, very hot!
