Family summer vacation for 2 weeks - where to go?
I feel like I am running late this year with our summer trip plans!! Its April and I've got nothing!
Who: 2 adults, 2 adventurous boys 7 1/2 and 10 1/2.
When: Late July, early August.
Where: Destination unknown.
Don't want to visit anywhere we've been before: Italy, England, France, Hungary.
Need a good mixture of history, culture and nature/outdoors.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated!!

Haven't been to Switzerland or Scandinavia (yet!), but certainly agree with Austria and/or Germany!
Castles, luge runs, river boats, hiking, history, steam trains, lakes... and two of the most beautiful countries in Europe!

What about somewhere in the USA?
Northern California (Big Sur, Redwood Forest, San Fran, Monterey)
Washington State (The Olympics, Seattle, the San Juan Islands)
Alaska (a land/sea cruise package so you get to see the coast and the interior)

If you're the outdoor-zy types then I would suggest Costa Rica. Its relatively inexpensive and you can choose just about any experience you like from hiking in a rain forest & beach goings to 4-wheeler jaunts into the national parks.

Thanks for the feedback!!
We have been to CR & Panama, No Cal, & we flew to Seattle and drove to BC.
We also just did Patagonia/Glaciers and so want to wait on Alaska.
Scandinavia has peeked some interest. Thinking Iceland/Norway/Denmark
Keep the suggestions coming!

opps, didn't finish my thought.
Go see Ludwigs Castles, ride a cable car to the top of the Zugspitze. Rent a car and drive the black forest. So much for you and the kids to do! You will love it. Great food, friendly people, best beer ever and beautiful sights to see.

Thanks everyone. Still undecided here. We were really thinking Iceland/Scand and now we are not sure due to the eruption.
Keep those suggestions coming. Something will stick sooner or later

Australia. I took my kids at 6 & 8 and they LOVED it. Cool animals and beaches. You can learn to surf, throw a boomerang and play a digeridoo. All good stuff.
I would add the adults also had a great time!

cathies - It all depends on your point of view. We went for three weeks in August. First week - Cairns area and the weather was beautiful. It is one of the best times of year as it rarely rains and things like box jellyfish aren't there to spoil the ocean. Second week - Surfer's Paradise area and the weather was about 22 C. Third week - Sydney. In the morning we needed a longsleeved shirt, by afternoon it was a shortsleeved shirt.
Unless you want to spend every moment in the water, which is not as warm in Sydney, there are so many other things to do that it does not hinder a great vacation in any way. I think Aussies way undersell their country in "winter". I live in Canada and you don't have anything I would recognize as winter!
