My family (I, my wife, and our 10 & 11 year old sons) are planning an 8 day trip to Iceland in late July. Thoughts on hotels (Hotel Reykjavik (family rooms) and Oak Hotel are two that have caught my eye). Thanks so much in advance.

I've stayed at Hotel Reykjavik for one night in March (layover to Europe) for the last four years. Rooms are generally small (relative to NA hotels), but clean. Make sure you take a trip to the Blue Lagoon and Alafos Sweater Factory!!!
I've never heard of the Oak Hotel, and although I've heard of Hotel Reykjavik I don't know anything to tell you about it. So while I can't help on those hotels, I do have some other suggestions -
In addition to the Blue Lagoon, by all means take the kids to one of the public swimming pools where they can meet other kids. I know one of them is over by Hotel Saga and it seems there must be a school over that way as well since I've seen alot of kids hanging out there with soccer balls, play grounds, etc. Also take them down to the government buildings at the end of the wading pool - saw a whole bunch of kids about the same age as your sons feeding the ducks while on lunch break.
You'll like it too, but by all means go horse back riding with the kids. Also if it's the right season (and I'm not sure it will be quite ready when you're there) the snowmobile trip on the glacier should be a big hit as well. The geothermal area and Geysir is a good idea. And on the north side of the island you might consider trying to go whale watching.
