Family holiday Oct-Dec 2015

Hello experienced travelers,
We are a husband, wife with a 7 year old and two four year olds. We are looking to travel from Australia to Europe for around 3 months Oct-Dec 2015 for a family adventure. We are restricted to this time due to work and schooling and realise it is coming into winter.
Husband enjoys surfing and was drawn to south of France around Biarritz, also Spain San Sebastian and around those areas to start. We surf with wetsuits and dont really need hot summery days for this. Although it would be nice to go to at least one nice warm place during our time. So maybe we could embrace the last of the summer in a warmer place then go Paris and maybe end up in a snowing place? or reverse, would love to visit Turkey, Croatia or Greek islands. I would like to have some time in Paris too. We dont want to move around to too many places but maybe up to 3 places as bases to travel and come back to? We are looking at house exchange for some of the time and make up the rest with holiday rentals. We are easy to please with accommodation and activities, would just to be nice to experience different cultures. Any advice would be much appreciated,
Thankyou Lawsonfive

Pais Vasco in Spain and Portugal are supposed to be good for surfing.

Since you're planning on being in Europe in December, look into making December the "snow" part of your trip and hit up the Christmas Markets in Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, etc.

The Coast of Portugal (the most southerly west tip with lots of Atlantic energy in the waves) is very good and you will find an interesting culture there. The Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentajano has some lovely beaches. This place is pretty classy http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_R...t_Algarve.html and like a lot of the park in the middle of nowhere but there is surfing down on the beach. If you want a busier area then you want Salema or Lagos on the south coast.

If you want snow to ski in the Novemeber and early December then you need to get o Norway, Sweden or Finland (also good because you can visit Father Christmas). I'd recommend Finland north of the Artic Circle. You can spend time with the Suomi (native deer herders), go do sleding and enjoy yhe company of some very friendly people.

In between, go stay somewhere in the triangle between Brussels, Strasbourg and Paris. So much to do around there, the public transport links are great.

May I suggest that you visit beautiful island Šolta. It is only 30 min away from Split, catamarans and ferries run all day on relation Split-Šolta so you can spend mornings exploring Split and afternoons you can easily rent standard or electric bicycle and enjoy breathtaking scenery. Or rent a kayak and explore islets in front of Šolta, rent a surfing board and enjoy always windy afternoons in Maslinica bay, or simply have a traditional meal while enjoying some of the most romantic sunsets you will ever see. I am Šoltan native and I guarantee that you will fall in love with this island according to your vacation preferences specified.
From Split you can make a day trip to Krka falls which are enriching experience. Also , you can rent a car from Split to go to the capital Zagreb and then to nearby popular ski resort Sljeme. Also, Kranjska Gora, Slovenia is very close so you might prefer to go skiing there.
I would definitely visit Basel, Switzerland. It is on a boarder of France, Hermany, and Switzerland, beautiful river Rhine
Please check out this facebook page to get an idea of what to expect on Šolta: https://www.facebook.com/soltamygreenisland…

or for accommodation in Šolta (all private accommodation by local people, amazing view overlooking sea and islets, all price ranges, and definitely at time you plan your vacation much cheaper out of season prices) check: http://www.eko-adria-solta.com/index.php/en

Have a great vacation!

Best,

Mia Jurjevic

You can take a fast train from Basel to visit Paris if you'd like. Traveling in Europe is easy since everything is close and well connected.

Hi, as you will travel in December, i suggest you to visit Christmas market in Austria (it is something special) and enjoy in beautiful Carinthia. I stayed in hotel in Mauthen and i really had a great vacation and enjoyed in great nature and delicious food. http://smart-travel.hr/en/holiday/ho...hof-mauthen-2/

Also, there are numerous thing you can do in Croatia. You can visit capital of Croatia, Zagreb and enjoy in its cultural and historic heritage, as well as other facilities. Also, Zagreb is located near Hrvatsko Zagorje and there are numerous facilities you can enjoy in (castles, gastronomic offer,..). You can visit National Park Plitvice (it will not he a high season, so you could enjoy in its beauty), or national park Krka. On the dalmatian coast you can visit cities as Zadar, Trogir, Split or Dubrovnik (each of them is special on its own way). Also, Istria has a lot to offer (depends what type of holiday you prefer).

If you want to visit Slovenia, I suggest you lake Bled and Bohinj (you can visit national park Triglav, it is really beautiful).

I hope I helped you with this.

Kind regards,

Jelena

You can try Hossegor for surfing, but it won't be warm. You might want to hop over to Morocco part of the time, but even there you would have to check the weather report first. I have been there in the winter when it was much cooler than usual and on top of that you find out that the hotels are designed without heating.
