Family first time Barcelona (where and how much ?)

Hi !

We (2 adults and 2 kids of 5 ans 9 years old) will be in barcelona in July . We will arrive from El-Prat airport.
questions:

1) should we stay 4 or 5 nights (we plan to go nothern spain and Portugal after that. We have 24 nights total)?

2) Where should we look to stay ? For now we've seen not too expensive appartments rental in Gracia and around Segrada Familia. Some in Eixample too.

Thanks !

(1) who knows? Depends upon your interests.

(2) Barcelona has tons of flats available through reputable agencies that you can browse at www.apartur.com. Considering that you don't state a price range, picking a flat for you is impossible.

2) I'd figure out what you want to see, then pick an area of Barcelona convenient to these sites. The Sagrada Familia is a bit away from the center of town. Which I think of as the Placa de Catalunya.

Any of those 3 areas you named would be fine to stay, actually. I'd just make sure about how far from a metro. Gracia is a little farther out, of course.

Do all of the apts have AC? I'd want it in July.

Thanks for those answers !

1) About the budget, we would like to pay between 100 and 150 euro by night

2) Of course AC is on our top list about ammeneties that we could find in the appartment !

3) About what we want to do: walk, see what tourist like to see for a first trip in Barcelona (Gaudis's sites for example). We are not very beach types...

The Sagrada Familia area is not very central to most of the most popular sights and areas in Barcelona. I would suggest upscale Eixample on both sides of fashionable and wide Passeig de Gracia or medieval and vibrant El Born.

El Born is the best cafes, tapas bars, restaurants, small shops and a cradle of Catalan identity and culture. I use to stay here. Close to the Barri Gotic, but less tourists around. http://www.barcelona-tourist-guide.c...s/el-born.html

Look up the address of the apartment on a map; sometimes owners exaggerate the location of an apartment to make it sound more attractive.

If you're going to the Sagrada Familia, Park Guell and Sant Pau, then this is a convenient location. But it's not central Barcelona.

The Block of Discord (modernist houses) and Gaudi's Casa Mila are in L'Eixample. This is a more central but more expensive area.

We were in Barcelona in 2010 and stayed there for 6 or 7 nights, and we were able to see everything we wanted to see. Because you are traveling with young children, which I believe means you will probably sightsee at a slower pace, I recommend at least 5 nights in Barcelona so that you can see many of the sights and not feel too rushed. To get an idea of what we did and saw, we visited Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, Casa Battlo, Casa Mila, a beautiful theater (forgot the name), the indoor market (Boqueria), Montjuic, churches, and also had time for just strolling around the neighborhoods. We really enjoyed Gracia, BTW, but I agree it is a little further out from most of the sightseeing. Depending on where else you are going once you leave Barcelona, you could easily spend 6 nights there.
