A Troll...?
Well I've spent some time under bridges, but...
Seriously, I've traveled throughout Germany in the summer, when the trees are full and green and again in the winter, when the decidous trees are bare - I figure something must occur in between.
Anyone have an idea as to the timing of 'something'?

To respond to your request:
"Until you have been in Bavaria (especially the area around Ludwig's Castles) and looked down at the valleys and lakes the first week of October, you can't begin to describe fall foliage"
Stay in the Garmisch area and you can also appreciate the Zugspitze by cog wheel and cable car.
Breathtaking!!

Wildschwein: Is this right?
I've lived in Frankfurt and New England and yes, Germany has the same type of season changes that you'd expect in Vermont for example.
James is absolutely right. Neuschwanstein Castle is perhaps at it's best when surrounded by bright fall foliage. That area and also around Oberammergau, Ettal and Garmisch is really something to see during this time of year. It is mainly rural with some of the best driving, views of mountains, valleys, lakes and such that you can spend days just taking it all in. It almost seems as though the hillsides and mountains are ablaze.
Have fun!

As to the question of when. This is going to be tricky to hit a season that can vary from year to year with a prebooked two week vacation. Leaves start to turn as the nightime temps near freezing and the first frost sets it all ablaze. Using this theory and historical temps for the area you are interested in would give you a fighting chance.

I bookmarked the following two sites when they were highly recommended by two separate posters about a year ago on this forum for fall travel in Germany.
Hope it helps.
