I took Lobo's advice, also seconded by several other posters, and we targeted Calde Verde. It was on a weekday night a few weeks ago, and we went at 8:30, had a good dinner and watched some dramatic Fado. There were quite a few empty tables, and from our vantage point we could see and hear very well...took many pix without getting in anyone's way..
We got there and back via the Elevador Gloria, which has its terminus just up the street from our, Hotel VIP Eden on Praca Restauradores.
Yes, we recommend it...don't know anything about the Perririnha in Alfama...though it would've been a bit harder to get to. The prices at Calde Verde are within reasonable, service staff is friendly and accomodating...

peppermintpatti (great screen name!):
Several posters and critics on TripAdvisor didn't care much for the Estalagem do Convento. We felt that although pleasantly funky, it was clean throughout, with a very nice and helpful desk staff, excellent loaded buffet breakfasts in a Victorian dining room...and a charming sittable courtyard on second level. Our room was very comfortable, and we had a view of the Obidos wall as you see by the pix. Parking is available on the street..we parked next to the wall which was very convenient in and out.
We do not hesitate to recommend the Estalagem. For €100...it's sort of a bargain.
There is also a little "hole in the wall" entrance (pardon the pun)to the town, just 50 level yards away (see pic), instead of trudging up the steep hill to the further away front entrance.
We did not take dinners at the Estalagem, but restaurant choices abound in and just outside the town. The Albergo Josefa do Obidos is on the slope of that above-mentioned hill..quite good for dinners. In town, the "Petrestum Domus" (sp.) is an inviting little place with an atmospheric, intimate dining room that won't break the bank.
Be sure to spend time visiting Nazare'/Sitio..especially Sitio..great views and a fun place to visit. When there, try the Casa Pires(h) just opposite the venerable Sitio cathedral...for lunch. The grilled calamari, made on the outdoor grill, is superb.
Enjoy your visit!

Thank you Stu, it always makes me feel better hearing from someone who has stayed in a place I'm going to! Thank you also for the restaurant tips! And, I think you must have been reading my mind, as I was just today worrying if we'd be able to drive near enough to the entrance! I'll be sure to post some experiences when we get back! pp
