Fado on National Public Radio
On this morning's Morning Edition, there was a story about fado at the Sao Miguel in the Alfama. You can read it or listen to it at this link: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/s...oryId=90961630
At the bottom of the page, there are other links to earlier stories on Portuguese music.

Ireynold1,
Thanks for the link! I love fado, and I treasure my recordings of Amalia Rodrígues from way, way, way back.
Do you have a favorite fado club in Lisbon? I haven't been to Sao Miguel-only to a couple of clubs in the Barrio Alto.
I was looking at the Veranos de la Villa program of cultural events in July-Aug. in Madrid and saw that Maritza, the contemporary fado sensation, is going to perform on July 13 at the Patio Central de Conde Duque.
For anyone in Madrid during July-Aug. the Veranos de la Villa has a great line up of world music.

Hi, Maribel,
I have been to a fado place in the Alfama whose name escapes me, but it wasn't exceptional. I plan to try Caldo Verde on my next trip, which is the club that's been recommended here by several people. It's not a professional place, but people say the level of the "amateurs" is pretty good. It's in the Bairro Alto, I think, so maybe you've been there.
I don't know if anyone has tried the Sao Miguel venue featured in the NPR story, but I might give that a try. Sounds like a similar set-up to Calo Verde.
I would love to go to that Veranos de la Villa event you mentioned. Will you be there? Mariza is a terrific performer, in my opinion, and I was kind of surprised to hear on this NPR snipped that these local and maybe more authentic singers really bashed her and some of the others on grounds of authenticity. I have to say, whether she's authentic or not, I can totally understand Mariza's international popularity. That voice.... Wow.

Hi Ireynold1
Yes, that voice!
Another voice that I absolutely love is that of Portugal's Dulce Pontes, Incidentally, she's also performing at Veranos de la Villa at Patio Central de Conde Duque (July 22) along with Estrella Morente. What a great duo!
I wish I could attend this summer, but we'll be in the north. I've seen some great world music performers at Conde Duque: Ruben Blades, Carlos Núñez, Juan Luis Guerra...
And I see that flamenco great, Antonio Canales will be performing in the Sabatini Gardens.
Here's the schedule:

Thanks for the fado recs. I'm filing them away for our next trip!

Well. I am a Fado novice but when we were in Lisbon we had the pleasure of friends taking us to Caldo Verde in the Bairro Alto one night.
Of course, I have never heard a professional live performance, but the people performing the night we were there were quite good.
Enjoy.
