FADO IN LISBON
Sorry to post this again; some typos in last message:
I am going to Lisbon in August and want to hear a lot of FADO. Any suggestions on the best places to hear it? I am a singer in the US and want to hear the most authentic and least "touristy." Appreciate any responses!

Stevie:
Enjoyed an evenng of Fado at a cozy place recommended by Lobo Mau (Lisbon Native and Fodorite member), If I recall. It was not that crowded on a weekday, pretty fair food, also. It's a block or two from the railhead of the funicular coming up to Bairro Alta from Placa Restauradores (terminal next door to the old movie theater Hotel, VIP Eden where we stayed.
Name: <b>"Calda Verde"<i/b> (popular soup of the same name is quite good)....also grilled steaks are their specialty...very fair priced.
Sung by a man and a woman, separately with guitar trio accompaniment. The woman sat with us for a while during the break and explained the lyrics. Very nice of her to do so.

Clube do Fado (mentioned above) and Mesa de Frades. While in Alfama visit Museu do Fado to get a historical perspective.
The big names in Fado scene are Ana Moura and Carminho.
The documentary "Anthony Bourdain in Portugal" is overall dark and pessimistic, however around minute 15 has 2 performances, one of Carminho in her best and another of a gentleman I can't name, and both are worth to see and listen.
