Extraordinary day trip in/from Prague

In May my wife and I will be visiting Prague for 3 days (Excluding travel time).
We are planning to spend time in different parts of Prague:
1st day - Old town
2nd day - Jewish Quater
3rd day - Prague Castle & Petrin Park

I don't plan in detail where to visit in each area yet, but basically we would like to see the buildings, tour maybe one museum/gallery around the area, see a farmer's market if there is, pick a cafe or restaurant to sample some local dishes and perhaps hunt for a concert or free music performance. You know, those ordinary must-see and must-do...
However I'm not too sure if we could actually cover all these places in a faster pace, or will we get bored after second day as the different parts of the same city somehow offer the similar "feeling". So I'm here to seek an alternate 1-day itinerary somewhere nearby Prague just in case we have our 3rd day free.
Both of us are not fancy of modern metropolitan cities. We like old buildings and heritage sites (that's why we visit Prague). We like nature & outdoor and don't mind long walk and easy hiking or biking. We also love to see small villages.
Let me know if you have any suggestion especially if it is a less popular place or countryside...or it could be a special place still within the Prague city that you think I will miss out.

If you're near Prague, definitely check out the Sedlec Ossuary and St. Barbara's Church in Kutná Horaand, but please do be respectful while in the Ossuary.

The Jewish Quarter will take half a day although I thought it was part of Old Town. You could easily spend a day wandering around Old Town Square, looking at the amazing architecture and embellishments on the facades.

See the Municipal House (guided tour), walk down Nerudova Street, Loreto Church is fabulous (guided tour). The Mucha Museum is small and full of his beautiful works.

Kutna Hora was interesting but not as interesting, nor as beautiful, as Prague. Three days is not too much time there.

IMHO 3 days is barely enough to see much of Prague. Based on your interests I would head for the Town Hall and pick up one or two of the small scale tours on the history and/or architecture of this wonderful city led by university professors or grad students.

walk down Nerudova Street

Adrienne, I think we should mention that Nerudova is an exceptionally steep street leading uphill to Hradcany Castle. If anyone has even minor walking difficulties, cab it or bus it rather than walk it.

By the way, there is a very good resto on the way up Nerudova called U Tri Houslicek, with a three-violin plaque over its doorway. All of this is in Mala Strana close to the Charles Bridge (Karluv Most).

<< walk down Nerudova Street >>

That's why I said "walk down" rather than "walk up." I should have been clearer. I didn't know how steep the street was and how long and walked up it! But did it slowly, stopping to look at the buildings and take photos.

The three violins was one of the photos I took but it was after lunch time so I didn't sample their cooking. Looks like I missed something good!

Terezin, if you need a day trip.

Go google it. The why is self-explanatory.

Three days isn't that much, probably about right to cover the basics. I liked Kutna Hora but it had nothing to do with any ossuary, where I didn't even go. It has an interesting history. I could see that as the only day trip as it isn't that far if you really needed more to do, but I doubt that will happen.

It really depends what you want and your interests, I don't believe in one-size-fits-all tourism. ONe thing I really enjoyed was the modern art museum where few tourists go, but if you aren't interested in that, of course, why go. It has a lot of Czech artists which you won't find in many other museums. It's north across the river. It's part of the national gallery. http://www.ngprague.cz/

Another thing that was special to me was to visit some of the museums and homes of classical composers, like Mozart, Dvorak and Smetana (him last for me). But if you were interested in that, you would definitely know about it already and have made a point of going there.

If you want something in Prague a little different, of course there are parks, and I enjoyed going south to the Vysehrad cemetery. http://www.1pragueguide.com/vysehrad-cemetery

It's right off the metro line as I recall, a short walk.

There are small farmers market on in the city at various locations at various times of the week ,usually on a Saturday (and some other days) there is a small but very good one at jihiro Z Podebrad metro, and there are often markets at Andel and namesti Republiky metro too but not every day of the week.
there is usually a fairly big farmers market on a Saturday at the Riverside market.http://www.holesovickatrznice.cz/en/home.html

Depending when in May you are visiting there is a Beer festival on in Letna park, worth a visit http://www.ceskypivnifestival.cz/en/...ue-2014/,there is also a great beer garden in the park there with some great views.

Hi guys, thank you for your responses in such a short time! Ya I know many say Prague is a wonderful city and 3-day is not long enough to cover the whole city. We might be the same. The reason I'm here is to hear from you some special places that I might miss out, something not normally the guide books will suggest. At least I will have more key words to google and select something of my interest So far you guys gave me some great ideas! Please continue to suggest me more. I believe when we leave Prague we will feel that we miss out so many places and need to go back again.

I also enjoyed Veletrzni Palace (the modern art museum Christina mentioned). I had I think six days in Prague and didn't get to see everything I wanted, but I like art museums, churches and leisurely meals an awful lot. I also toured the Schwarzenberg and Sternberg galleries, part of the National Gallery, the link Christina included. This was during the dog days of August. Two out of the three had blissfully cooling air conditioning.

I went for long jogs in both Petrin and Letenska parks. Both offer beautiful vistas of the city and opportunities for unwinding. Up near the top of Petrin park is Strahov Monastery and its beautiful library. You might want to include a visit.

For three days I'd probably stay in the city, but I suppose if you really want to see something else you could go out to the sites mentioned above or perhaps a half-day trip to one of the castles nearby.

rohkbb- thanks for asking the same question I was going to post today and the answers confirm the 3 day plan. If I may ask one additional question...are there portions that would benefit from a guide or can you do it on your own and get the same sense of history and beauty?

I second Vsyehrad and the beer garden in Letna park. I found it was nice to visit one of the popular sites, like the castle or Jewish Quarter, in the morning and something less crowded and more low key in the afternoon. The gardens below Prague Castle were really nice too and pretty empty of other tourists surprisingly. We also enjoyed chilling out with a beer at the Strahov Monastery brewery afterwords.

I'd recommend to see Karlštejn, which is a beutiful castle near Prague (you can take a train from railway station Smíchovské nádraží). Have look at this: http://www.hradkarlstejn.cz/en/

Have a nice trip!
