Extra Days in Frankfurt--any ideas, Mainhattengirl or others?

All you guys who helped me plan my two weeks of day trips mostly using my RailPass while hubby works near Frankfurt were spot on and I have had a blast although I'm pretty tired. I visited on my own the Rhine twice (Rüdesheim, Rheinfels, Rheinstein), Mainz for half a day, Speyer, Heidelberg, Marburg, Ashaffenburg, Frankfurt, Köln ; hubby and I went to Trier, Luxembourg, Wartburg, and Frieburg. And now, surprise, hubby must work longer and I am staying and looking for ideas of places to go. (He will take me to the Mosel Valley and Burg Elz later and maybe Bamberg.)

I've never been a position like this before, but here goes--mainhattengirl, would you be interested in a Fodortie GTG?

And where should I go? I am definitely going back to Frankfurt probably twice and hit the museums; I have one day left of my RailPass and may use it for Bamberg; my day to Büdingen got sorta cancelled or postponed because of rail problems so I will want to go there. As of this typing (on a German hotel keyboard so am having some issues!) I will go to Weisbaden. I may go back to Mainz as I loved it and only had half a day there. I have 9 more days to travel. I think I am going to prefer to not spend tons of more train tickets, so am looking at where I can go in Hesse/RMV service area and use day cards (or maybe their week card--looking into that.) And I might go to Bad Homburg for half a day and then back to Höchst (we ate there and looked around and took pics but I could spend a bit more time there.)

I am being dropped off at the Frankfurt Höchst train station between 7 and 7:30 and prefer to be back there by 18:00.

Ideas, anyone? And yes I am working on my trip report but won't post it until I get back to the states and can edit it more easilý on a familiar computer.

Limited access to internet to check the Forum, but I will look as often as I can.

Thanks in advance. And hope to hear from Mainhattengirl with your ideas for sure! I have grown to really like Frankfurt already.

How about Würzburg or Rothenburg o/d Tauber?

In case you are interested in contemporary art: the Documenta is on in Kassel.

Jewish history and Romanesque cathedrals? Worms.

Hessenpark open-air museum village near Neu-Anspach (a bit tricky on public transport, though). Saalburg, a reconstruction of an ancient Roman fort on the Limes.

The Lahn valley further downstream: Wetzlar, baroque Weilburg, the castle ruin of Runkel, Limburg cathedral, the elegant spa town of Bad Ems.

I also second Würzburg!

I like both Idstein and Seligenstadt. Lots of fachwerk buildings in their Alt Stadt areas. Darmstadt might be interesting too. All 3 are with-in 45 min. of Frankfurt. If you go to Idstein, make sure you visit the Union church. The entire ceiling is made of 36 paintings done in the middle 1600's. Not done by Ruben, but supposedly in his workshop and in his style. Very unusual.

Today is the last day for the Hoechst fest. Were you able to get into the Justinus church?

Wiesbaden is very pretty and the pastor of the Markt Kirche, Jeffery Myers, is from Kansas, so very friendly and chatty if he happens to be there when you stop in.

I can do a meet-up on Tues. late afternoon or on Thur. Am actually going to Büdingen on Wed. What kind of train problems are you having with that? Let me know about meeting up.

Agree with visiting Hessen Park. Though tricky to get to, it is well worth a visit. Over a 100 buildings, plus 2 Synagogues have now been moved there or rebuilt after moving. Lots of heirloom animals. The Saalburg is impressive, so if you go to Bad Homburg, I would include it. Use www.rmv.de to find a good connection, as the #5 bus only runs once an hour. You can get that right outside of the train station. In Bad Homburg, do a tour of the palace and also visit the church next door. Called the Redeemer church, it is stunning inside.

While visiting Frankfurt, have you gone to the Karmeliter Cloister yet? I also recommend the Judengasse Museum, the Städel, the Kunsthandwerk Museum, the Film Museum, the Schirn & the Liebieg Haus Museum (they are having a combination Jeff Koons exhibit in those last 2)

Thanks all above. In 1988 hubby and I went to Würzburg and it was great but I decided I didn't necessarily want to repeat that. I won't rule it out completely. And also went to Rothenburg then (and it's a bit tricky via public transport it looked like to me.)

Mainhattengirl--I tried to go to Büdingen last Thursday and at Hanau they said track was closed for at least 2 hours. So I returned to Frankfurt and went to Ashaffenburg and into Frankfurt for a little. So I don't expect a repeat of those issues! Are you traveling by train to Büdingen? I thought to go myself either Wednesday or Thursday. If you'd be interested in a companion let me know here. Or a meetup on Thursday in Frankfurt? I'm very flexible this week except for needing to leave from Höchst each day, be back there around 1800, and I'd like to schedule my Frankfurt days in a row to take advantage of the museum pass.

Off to Weisbaden later this morning. I will check back here, Mgirl, this evening to see what you say. Bitte!

For a meet-up, either Thursday or Friday is fine with me. Any time is ok too, Perhaps somewhere around the Römer if you are familiar with that area. Or if you want to meet at a museum, that is ok too. Have you been to the Judengasse Museum yet or the Schirn?

We really enjoyed Darmstadt - 20 minutes by train from Frankfurt. Some interesting Jugendstil architecture and nice pedestrian centre.

Mainhattengirl--that would be wonderful! How about Thursday morning 8:30 or 9 at the Roemer right at the TI office? I will go to Buedingen Tuesday, then get the Museum Pass to use in Frankfurt Wednesday and have that also left to use Thursday when you can show me the best of what I haven't gotten to. How does that sound? Thanks!

texasbook - what were your favorite castles/palaces close to Frankfurt? We plan on doing Wurzburg and Eltz, and are wondering if both Rheinfels and Rheinstein are worth a look inside.

Have fun in Büdingen!

Mainhattengirl--terrific! I have short brown hair and glasses and will be wearing a black day-backpack and a dslr camera!

Karen--I have too many favorite places now to tell about in my limited Forum time. But I loved both Rheinfels and Rheinstein. Marksburg is also worth a look; depends if you want more ruins or more preserved. I get to see Eltz next weekend, but I know it's my husband's favorite German castle. Heidelberg is, even though crowded, certainly worth a look. I'm not a big fan of palaces as such so don't have faves.

Mainhattengirl--If you are on the Forum tonight, just confirming our meet Thursday morning.

Today I got the 2day museum pass and LOVED the Staedel, enjoyed the Museum of Communication, and popped into the Museum of Architecture.

Looking forward to meeting you. Guess I'll also have on a blue rain jacket!

I have longish, brown hair, and will have on a blue messenger bag. Middle-aged, with jeans and white tennis shoes.

See you in the morning.

Just wanted to say thanks Mainhattengirl for a pleasant morning together. (Bit tardy--been without internet and also taking weekend excursions to Burg Eltz/Deutsch Ecks/Braunfels one day and Bamberg another!) I took your suggestions, mostly, and just spent the afternoon in 4 more museums in Frankfurt (Staedel again just for a little bit and a bit of food); I LOVED the Film Museum! It was a hoot. The Museumsufer Pass is absolutely a bargain. In the evening hubby met me for dinner in Sachsenhausen and we enjoyed your suggestion of Dauth-Schneider. Again thanks for all your good tips for leaning my way around a bit and enjoying Frankfurt quite a lot! Blessings on you--

It was a pleasure meeting you too! Glad you enjoyed your visit here and that you liked Dauth-Schneider. Did you have the Gruene Sosse or a Frankfurt Schnitzel?

I got some good photos of the archeological dig of the Staufen Palace Harbor, we took outside of the Historical Museum. Exciting to watch these digs as they uncover some of Frankfurts' early history.

Just got back stateside (sans bags but that's another story about DFW! maybe they will arrive later tonight). I had the Frankfurter Schnitzel and enjoyed it muchly.

I plan to try to sort through my 1000's of pics over the next few days as we get back into some sort of routine and look back at our 3.5 weeks in Germany with many great memories. And gonna try to at least start a trip report for here. Thanks again MHG!
