exploring castle ruins...
Just curious if anyone knows of some castle ruins that are open to the public along the romantic road. I know there are many along the Rhine, but we will not be in that area. My two boys would love to explore!

The end of November. Thanks for the web site. I have looked through many and seem to get more info than I can process. I was actually hoping someone had been to a couple and could direct us there. We will be meandering down to Reutte from Rothenburg.
Thanks,

The Weikersheim Palace and Wurzburg's Residenz are both worthwhile destinations I can vouch for. Both are listed on the site given by Rufus and aren't terribly far from one another. However, neither remotely qualifies as "castle ruins".
Southeast of Rothenburg you'll find a couple of interesting towns - Pappenheim, with its own ruined castle, courtesy of the French, which you can tour through on your own (good falconry show there too on the castle grounds.) But I can't say the place will be accessible in late November.
Weissenburg is a small version of Rothenburg without the tourists, worth a stop if you're in the area.
Burghausen is an interesting old fortification near the Austrian border in eastern Bavaria that I've visited and that you can read about here if you decide to wander off the Romantic Road a bit more (The website author says it's more worthwhile than the much ballyhooed and overtouristed Neuschwanstein, and I tend to agree.)
www.roadstoruins.com (look at castle directory for this and other castle options in Bavaria and other states.)

Thanks. I have read about Burghausen and my interest was peaked. How about Meersburg? The info says it has a great show of medievil armour and weapons--great boy stuff!!! Anyone been there? I think my boys will get more out of exploring ruins than the fancy castles like Neuschwanstein. I certainly appreciate the info being shared.

The castle in Meersburg is terrific. By far our favorite and we visited about 10 castles during our two weeks in Germany. We did both the Meersburg castle and Neuschwanstein on the same day. Wished we had spent more time at Meersburg and skipped Neuschwanstein. If you go to Meersburg eat at GytsSchanke (it's on the lake) - the flammkuchen is wonderful. Also, the Bronnbach Monastery is nice and there are some cool castle ruins in Wertheim. I don't know if either will be open in late November.
