Explore Istria from Piran or Rovinj?
I'll be driving from Ljubjana and plan to spend two nights in either Piran or Rovinj with a just a full day to see what I can of Istria. I'll then be leaving by air to Dubrovnik from the Pula airport at noon.
I've read good things about both towns. But I'm leaning towards Piran--although it would be a somewhat longer drive to Pula. I could even spend a night in each or even in Pula. But it appears that everything is pretty close together. I'd appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks Jan. I travel light, so checking in and out of two hotels shouldn't be a problem.
Now, any hotel suggestions for either? I'm thinking "Max" for Piran and the more upscale Hotel Angelo D'Oro in Rovinj.

Slojan, or any other knowledgeable person, my husband and I will be in Istria in October. I was thinking of using Pazin for a central base (my husband hates to pack up and leave - had rather stay in one place a few nights)to vist Piran, Pula and Rojini. Have you ever been to Pazin? Does this sound like a reasonable idea?

Jeff, a big YES to Hotel Angelo d'oro. Stay IN Rovinj, not in one of the big hotels to the south. Especially if you have such a short time. Personally, I'd stop for lunch in Piran but spend both nights in Rovinj.

Thanks Catbert. This helps. What was it that you liked about the Hotel Angelo d'Oro? Nice rooms and staff? I read that the rooms on the "street" could be noisy. Any experience with that?
How about the restaurant? It looks nice, but then I read that there are many to choose from.

Jeff, I didn't stay there. I stayed at Hotel Adriatic. I think what you've chosen is much nicer (and more expensive). I just think you'll have such a better experience in the old town of Rovinj. The big hotels are not nearly so nice. The old town has so many little streets and alleys that everytime you think you've seen it all you turn the corner and find new delights.
As far as restaurants, there are lots of choices. My favorites were tucked into corners of the old town and hanging on the edge of the walls. The bulk of the tourists will be sticking to the places along the main harbor and on the square.
Be sure to leave for Pula in time to visit the Roman amphitheater.

Thanks all. Now I'm back to Jan's suggestion and will probably spend a night in each: saving a bit on lodging in Piran at Pension Max and spluging a bit in Rovinj at Hotel Angelo d'Oro. Has anyone stayed at either?

Hi
If the Hotel Piran is the one I stayed at several yrs. ago it was great. We had a terrace on the Adriatic and the view was beautiful. In Rovinj, we stayed at one of the large hotels that had half board if you wanted, or just breakfast. We had breakfst and it was about a ten minute walk to downtown.
In both Piran and Rovinj the seafood restaurants are very good. Very Italian. Italian is spoken is both towns. In Piran Italians would come over for the day on their large boats. The waterfront in both are very beautiful.. We are foodies too and we tried the supper buffet at our hotel during mussel season in Sept. and I had some of the best steamers ever. I had them in town also. The buffet also had many Croatian dishes in addition to Italian and it gives a chance to try foods you might not otherwise.

I don't know the price at the Angelo d'Oro for sure, since they haven't gotten back to me yet. It's been a couple days. Everyone else--the less expensive hotels-- responded quickly. Here's their website:

I'd still like to hear from anyone who's stayed there.
